Fireside Lodge Fishing Report 8/4 to 8/11 2012

Trophy 21" Smallmouth Bass Fishing Fireside Lodge

This week’s weather was as near perfect as any week could get. Daytime temperatures were in the 70’s and lows in the low 50’s. Rain, which we need to maintain water levels, was very scarce. With the sun setting earlier every day along with the cool nights & early mornings you could feel that the fall season is just around the corner.

GREAT Trophy Smallmouth Bass Fishing at Fireside Lodge Canada
Long time guests, since 2002, father & sons Tim, Joe, & Adam Bergen with cousin Tom Komenda from Orland Park & Hickory Hills, IL returned. DOA they had a number of Muskie follows and landed 2, Tim had a 28” & Joe caught a nice 32”Musky, GREAT Start. 2nd day had this group catching over 20 fish, mostly Northern Pike and Tim K came up with the big catch of the day landing a GIGANTIC 20” Trophy Master Anglers Award Smallmouth Bass. WOW what a GREAT catch by Tim. Musky fishing can be tough sometimes but always brings about new happenings. On this their 3rd day while Musky hunting several 20-32” Pike were caught, Tim K had a Muskie hooked that jumped completely out of the water while spitting his lure out, & on another Musky follow, while doing the figure 8, he accidentally hooked the Musky in the tail. Well, a good battle took place, which Mr. Musky won. Remember Tim just lost the battle no the war. While fishing Tim & son Adam had a HUGE follow that came back a second time and then a 2nd fish, a Musky, also followed in at the same time. Both fish just sat by the boat for such a long time that Tim was able to pick up 3 different rods / lures to do figures 8’s, but to no avail. Frustrating but at the same time Fabulous. On a high note Adam caught a HUGE 19.5” Master Anglers Award Smallmouth Bass. Fourth & final day ended their trip with a BANG, as they caught several big Northern Pike, Joe caught his first ever Master Anglers Award fish by landing a very large 18.5” Smallmouth Bass, Tim K caught a very big heavy 37” Tiger Musky, & Adam landed a dandy 36-inch Muskie which was in & out of the net on the first try, but Adam kept tension on the fish & the second try was successful. In addition to this Adam landed a gigantic 21” Master Anglers Award Trophy Smallmouth Bass, This is the second year in a row Adam caught a 21” Smallie. All left having had a FABULOUS time & said they will return in 2013.

Heavy 38" Musky Fishing in Canada at Fireside Lodge
First time guests Jim & Laurel Brown from LaPorte, IN were excited to arrive. 1st day ever on our waters they did a lot of exploring and caught some nice Northern Pike. Second day was a venture toward the Twin Falls area. They truly enjoyed the Falls having a lunchtime break there, and caught some fish throughout the day. On their third and final day the weather was gorgeous, 72 and sunny, which they thoroughly enjoyed while having there best day fishing, catching Northern Pike & Smallmouth Bass. Laurel catch her biggest Smallie at 16.5-inches. They also found a wonderful lunch spot on higher ground where they just sat for a while enjoying the mixture of sun & refreshing breeze off the sparkly water. Both had a very nice 3-day stay and thanks for choosing us.

Show Me a 19" Smallmouth Bass in Canada Lakes
Returning for their 6th consecutive year was Don, Audrey, and son Matt Holesinger from Fulton & Roscoe, IL. DOA they caught Smallmouth right away with Don setting the bar landing a 17.5”er. 1st day they caught 18 Smallmouth Bass with Matt landing the largest at 17”. This was considered a slower day by their Fireside Lodge standards which are pretty high, as they usually catch 30-60 Smallmouth every day. Second day they portaged to a Smallmouth Bass Lake to try something different & had a real good day catching 18 Smallmouth Bass with all being 15” or larger and Audrey came up with the largest fish so far landing a HUGE 19” Master Anglers Award Trophy Smallmouth & almost lost her fishing rod in the process. As she was fighting off some boat flies she laid her rod down & the Bass hit at that moment which had Don almost going in the lake after the rod. He just did grab onto it and handed it off to Audrey who caught the trophy bass. I think Don deserves some type of assist?? He was re-paid by catching his own Trophy measuring 18.5”. “GREAT DAY”! 3rd day was a super day fishing & catching as the caught 16 Northern Pike and 20 Smallmouth Bass. All the Smallmouth Bass were big, over 15”, & Don caught one Trophy at 19”, Matt landed four trophies, 1-18”, 2-18.5” & 1-19”. All the Smallies were caught on Tubes. FABULOSU DAY!!!! 4th & final day they enjoyed the terrific 72-degree temps while catching 21 Smallmouth Bass. All had a wonderful fishing trip making another set of family memories & said they will be returning in 2013.

Plentiful Trophy Smallmouth Bass Fishing at Fireside Lodge
Fishing at Fireside Lodge for their 1st time were Glen Brand & Tony Meo from Streamwood & Schaumberg, IL. 1st day they had a ball learning the waters and catching some Northern Pike. 2nd day had these two portaging for to a Northern Pike lake having a ball walking the trail and fishing all alone on a secluded wilderness lake. They caught some Pike & enjoyed the whole event. 3rd day they had good action catching both Smallmouth Bass and Northern Pike, and felt like they were really getting to know the lake. 4th, 5th and 6th days they adventured into 3 different lakes not only enjoying the fishing but the wilderness aspect of traveling through a creek for an hour, and portaging to another lake with anticipation of what awaited them on the other side, to visiting our Little Vermilion natural wonder, Twin Falls. Fishing is the reason they came, but making Fireside Lodge Friends was the big bonus for these two as they befriended other guests from TN, VA, NC, WI, MI, & IL. That’s the Fireside Lodge magic we sometime talk about as our guests usually share information & end up leaving making new friendships. Glen & Tony had a FABULOUS time with us at Fireside Lodge as we did enjoying their company.

Back to Back Trophy Smallmouth Bass Fishing in Canada
Returning for their 12th consecutive year we father/son Tom & Mark Reese from Bartlett, TN & Alexandria, VA. First day they did not set the world on fire just catching a few Smallmouth Bass and Northern Pike, but Tom said it perfectly “ We had a blast as father & son enjoying fishing, the wilderness, and catching up on life”.

Drop Shot Fishing for Trophy Smallmouth Bass in Canada
Well-said Tom. 2nd day had them catch some Smallmouth Bass and a few Pike with a few bite offs. They were using a drop shot technique which was a new method to them. I suggested it for Smallmouth Bass as they were on a very light bite. However the Pike were not, as they attacked it and broke them off instantly. 3rd day they did ok catching about 8 Smallmouth Bass. They however saved the best for their 4th & final day. After location discussion the plan was catching Smallmouth Bass on the drop shot rig with night crawlers. They had success at the first spot and stayed there for 3 hours. I guess the fishing was good there. The caught Smallmouth after Smallmouth with Tom landing 2 Master Anglers Award Smallies both measuring 18.25” and Mark got a HUGE 19” Trophy. Great finish to another memorable father & son trip at Fireside Lodge and they have all good intentions of returning in 2013.

Fabulous Big Musky Fishing at Fireside Lodge Canada
Long time guest Leon Robbins from Yadkinville, NC returned with his son Andy from Cary, Justine Sebastian from Mt Holly for their 4th trip & Leon’s nephew Troy Reed from Winston Salem or his 2nd time. 1st day was fabulous as they caught 34 Northern Pike, 2 Muskie and several Smallmouth Bass, with Leon having the hot hand catching a 17.5” Smallmouth Bass and a 38 “ Musky. All had great fun and they had plenty of stories in the dinning room at suppertime. 2nd day was very good for Leon again as he caught a 28” Muskie and a 17.5” very large Smallie fly-fishing on a fly he tied. While fishing with Leon, Andy hooked and lost a huge Muskie breaking Andy’s line. 3rd day had Andy & Troy fishing for Muskie for most of the day, both losing a big fish, and caught 1 small musky. They also caught some Smallmouth Bass. Leon & Justine had a fast action day catching 35+ Northern Pike & three Smallmouth Bass. 4th day was a slower day catching a few Smallmouth & Northern Pike. 5th & final day started very early fishing before breakfast catching some nice Smallies & a nice Pike. The rest of the day was full of action on Smallmouth Bass & & Northern Pike with Troy lading another Muskie for the trip, which made 7 for the group in 5 days of fishing. All left saying they had a GREAT time and hope to return in 2013.

Father & Son Trophy Smallmouth Bass Fishing in Canada

Father & Son Smallmouth Bass Fishing at Fireside Lodge Canada
Father & son Mike & Zack Gerulski from Huntington Woods, MI returned for their 11th consecutive year. 1st day before supper they landed 13 fish, 2 being Pike and 11 Smallies. There is always a friendly competition among these two, and today Zack seemed to come out on top. 2nd day was very good as they caught 22 Smallmouth Bass & several Pike with Mike landing a big boy at 36”. The Smallmouth really seemed to turn on after supper catching many bigger Smallies & having a lot of other action, which did not result in catches. 3rd day they stared with an early morning pre-breakfast fish, which had Mike catching 5 and Zack doing a heck of a job netting Mikes fish. Zack said he could have caught more fish in his sleep. The rest of the day they caught about 8 Smallies before supper & after they had lots of action catching 8 more Smallies and several Northern Pike. 4th day was portaging for Smallmouth Bass. They had a great day catching quality fish, landing big Smallmouth Bass, Mike catching a Master Anglers Award 18.5” Trophy & he also caught a 28” Musky. They also experienced having multiple Musky follows at the same time. Several times they had 2-4 Musky following their lure at the same time. That evening they also caught some nice Smallies after supper. 5th & final day started early fishing before breakfast and Mike caught a nice Northern Pike & both caught several Smallmouth Bass. The rest of the day was spotty however but after supper they had very fast action catching 12 Smallmouth Bass, several Pike and missing some fish. Trophy 19" Brownie Smallmouth Bass Fishing at Fireside Lodge
Mark & Marisela Hazzard from Sanford, NC were making there first trip as a couple to Fireside Lodge. Mark was first introduced to Fireside Lodge by his Uncle, a 22-year guest, Frank Hazzard from Arlington, TX. We were thrilled to see Mark back at Fireside Lodge with his wife Mari. 1st full day on the water Mari caught her first Northern Pike ever, along with several others, and they caught some Smallmouth Bass. 2nd day had them catching 7 Smallies and several Northern Pike, with Mari again being the Pike Queen. 3rd day was very good as they took a boat ride through a long creek seeing many of nature’s wonders including a huge Bull Moose. They also caught 22 fish 8 Northern Pike, Mark caught a Musky and both caught 13 nice Smallmouth Bass with mark landing 2 Master Anglers Award Smallies both measuring 19”. 4th day was a “GREAT DAY” expressed by Mari. They caught 32 Smallmouth Bass, Mari catching the largest at 17” plus 3 Northern Pike, with Mari also landing the largest, a 31”er. I’d say Mari had a great day being this is the first time ever fishing in the Canadian Wilderness. 5th & final day Mari said they had a wonderful time enjoying the beautiful 75 degree temperatures with a light breeze as they caught some Smallmouth Bass, & Mari caught 6 Northern Pike herself including a beauty, very heavy 31-incher. Both had a “FABULOUS” stay and said they will return after their next deployment with the US Air Force is over. We specially thank them for their service and helping secure freedom & security in the US and choosing Fireside Lodge to make some special memories together.

Fishing for BIG Smallmouth Bass at Fireside Lodge is a BLAST

Great Muskie catch while Fishing Canada at Fireside Lodge
Father & son Al & David Wortz from Howards Grove, WI were thrilled to be back fishing at Fireside Lodge. Al told me their main focus was on having David catch a Muskie. First day the opportunity bell rang as they had several follows, Al had a Muskie blow up on a Top Raider, and David had a big Musky attack his Bull Dog at boat-side. When David went to set the hook, he pulled it out of the fish’s mouth as it only grabbed the tail end of the Bull Dog. Afterward the Musky still chased the lure again but made a quick exit. Very exciting & slightly disappointing at the same time. David however did catch 10 Northern Pike with most being on the Bull Dog. 2nd day was great as they caught 15 Northern Pike and 1 Musky. After supper they decided to fish for Musky so Al asked David if he wanted to use they only Bull Dog they had left. He decided to us a Mepps Spinner. Well, after AL landed a nice 32” Muskie using the Bull Dog, David realized he made the wrong choice for that evenings fishing. 3rd day had a very exciting beginning as Al hooked a nice 28” Pike on the Bull Dog (what else) and after netting & releasing Al’s fish David hooked into another 31” Northern Pike with the Bull Dog & Al had to net it before he was able to get his Bull Dog out of the net. Fast & furious action is an understatement. 4th & final day was terrific fishing for large Smallmouth Bass. Going out with the intent to catch Big Smallmouth they did just that landing 20 very large Smallies. Great day of fishing & another memorable fishing trip between Al & David. Thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge to make you special father & son memories.
