Fireside Lodge Fishing Report 6/10 to 6/18 2016

The week’s weather was pleasant but having a 30-hour cold front

that brought some heavy rain & winds. The fishing however stayed very good as you will see below.

Father & So Jack & Steven Starnes from Wise & Duffield, VA returned for their 11^th time. 1^st day they hit it BIG getting into a flurry of large fish 30-38” including a 40.5” Trophy Northern Pike, plus a 41” & 44” Trophy Muskie. 2^nd day was about 50 Northern Pike & 12 Smallmouth Bass. 3^rd day each caught a Muskie 34-35” and loads of Pike. 4^th day they hooked 7 Muskie landed 4 up to 37” 4 BIG Pike 12 SB between 15-18” plus 30-40 Pike. 5^th day

the Smallmouth were hot on Top-water catching over 30 plus 40 Northern Pike. 6^th & final day was a good finish catching close to 50 Northern Pike and each caught another Muskie making the week total 11 Muskie landed including a 40, 41, 44”. Before leaving they made their 2017 reservations.

DOA They started things off with some nice Northern Pike, Adam landing the largest at 36”. 2^nd day was a great day finding a few new areas catching many Northern Pike, Adam again landing the largest at 36”, plus Tim had a 37” Muskie & caught a Trophy 19” Smallmouth Bass. 3^rd day

from Midlothian, VA Jeff Stewart & Conrad Joanis from Oak Park, IL were excited to get started fishing. 1^st day Alan & Winston said they had the best day of their lives catching 80-90 Smallmouth Bass all being 15-17.75” & Al caught a huge 19.5” Trophy plus a nice Tiger Muskie. Also Jeff hit it Big catching a Trophy 42” Northern Pike. 2^nd day Winston & Jeff caught over 65 Smallmouth Bass with Winston catching 2 over 18”, nothing under

15” & most were 17” plus. 3^rd day was another good day despite a cold front moving in all catching many Smallmouth Bass along with some Northern Pike. 4^th & Final day all did great catching 30-40 fish per boat; mostly Smallmouth Bass & Al caught another Muskie.

Long time Guests Walt LaCasse, John Hietala, Waysata & Northfield, MN, Ronnie Ditillo Pittsburgh, PA & Jim Jones McKinney, TX were returning for their 18^th year. 1^st day was very good catching between 15-20 fish per boat being a mix of NP & SB plus Walt caught a 35” Muskie. 2^nd day Walt & John had a banner day catching well over 50 Northern Pike using the wind to their advantage fishing in a wind blown bay having several doubles & even a triple as John caught 2 while Walt was catching 1. Also John missed on the biggest Muskie he has seen.

3^rd day was good fishing in cold front conditions catching many Smallmouth Bass & Pike. 4^th & final day was a good day for all catching Pike & Smallmouth Bass with each boat catching 20-25 fish.

Fireside Lodge for their 2^nd stay coming all the way from Wedlebury Bicester, Oxford, England. 1^st day they caught 16 Northern Pike and 2 Muskie. 2^nd day was a 26 Northern Pike day. 3^rd was a portage adventure which they loved the walk through the bush and solitude of the lake plus caught 60 Northern Pike, a PB for all. 4^th day Norman had a BIG Fish day catching a 37” Muskie & 36” Northern Pike plus they caught over 20 fish total. 5^th day was like nothing they ever experienced before catching over 90 Pike. 6^th day

had them having another bang up day catching well over 60 Northern Pike in search of the BIG fish. 7^th day was very windy but they managed to catch some nice fish including Steve’s PB landing a BIG 37” Muskie off a lure purchased from my tackle shop that very morning. 8^th & final day they were shooting for Muskie and were successful, Norman catching the best fish at 36-inches. Totals for the week were 289 Northern Pike 4 Muskie, & 14 Smallmouth Bass, which was their PB for a fishing trip. All left having had a great holiday and said that they will be back

returned for the 6^th consecutive year with Greg Stowe also from Henrico. DOA they started with 20 Smallmouth Bass. 1st full day was a surprise as they caught 58 Smallmouth Bass despite a cold front, rain and wind, with a lot 15-17 & Greg landed a BIG Trophy 19”. 2nd day was even better catching 65

Smallmouth Bass 15-19” Greg with another 19”. 4^th day was incredible as they caught 87 Smallmouth Bass with 90% being 15-18” & Doug had a HUGE Trophy at 20”. 5^th & final day was another good day catching 51 BIG Smallmouth with both Doug & Frank both catching 20-inch Trophies. Total was 331 Smallmouth Bass. All left having a great trip already planning for 2017.

My 1st Trophy Smallmouth Bass Fishing at Fireside Lodge by Aylin

for the 1^st time. These two had a great 1^st day exploring catching some fish along the way. 2^nd day was even better as they caught Northern Pike with a few Bass mixed in, Al landing a 35” & Ailylan had a huge fish follow. 3^rd day they did great catching Pike & Bass, Al landing a 36” Pike & Aylin caught a trophy 18” Smallmouth Bass & was all smiles in the dinning room. 4^th & final day was great as they caught over 30 Smallmouth Bass, really getting down the technique of fishing the sinking worm. Both thoroughly enjoyed their experience and hope to return.

Brett & his good friend Ben Zordani all from New Lenox, IL DOA Mary got right to where she left off in 2014 landing a nice Tiger Muskie. 1^st day they struggled through cold front conditions with some heavy rain catching 8 Smallmouth and a few pike. 2^nd day was spent catching a mix of Smallmouth & Pike plus Muskie Mary did it again landing a barred Muskie. 3^rd day proved to be tremendous, catching 101 Northern Pike. 4^th & final day was a HUGE day catching day as Doug & Mary caught 131 Pike with Brett & Ben landing 50. Doug & Mary’s departing words were “We plan to see you Next Year”.

Chisholm son Brian, Alan Paxton, Bud McLaine, Jeff’s other son Matt, Rowley, MA & Charlie Piermarini, Chicago, IL 1^st day was fabulous fly-fishing with each boat catching 25-30, mostly BIG Smallmouth Bass up to 5lbs & a few Pike. 2^nd day was very similar to the first with Jeff & Charlie also catching some Pike. 3^rd day by noon each Bud & Alan caught 6-8 Trophy Smallmouth Bass 4-5lbs lost almost as many. Jeff, Charlie, Brian, and Matt all had a good day Smallmouth fishing catching over 20 per boat with many being large in the 17 inch class. 4^th & last day was great as Jeff & Charlie caught 40+ Northern Pike Fly Fishing, Brian & Matt did about the same with Bud & Alan staying after the Smallmouth having another good day.

Weather was, Tough, Tougher, and beautiful starting with several cold fronts having lows at 32F and one day it was still 48F at 2PM with a strong wind. By the weeks end it turned sunny having highs in the mid 70’s.

from day 3 some catching 30-40 Smallmouth Bass between 15-19”, many pike being caught, Perry caught a Muskie, and the biggest catching was had by Bob as he landed two Muskie, 37” and 38”. Plus two Pike measuring in the 35-36” zone. All left having a blast with all intentions of returning.

Oaks, MN was here for his 1^st of 2 trips in 2016 bringing a friend for his 1^st time, Christopher Honda from Roseville, MN. These two wasted no time catching big Smallmouth Bass within a few hours of arrival, Chris with 2 17.5”ers and Paul a Trophy 18.5”. 1^st day they caught over 40 big Smallmouth Bass including 10 over 18” and 15 Pike. Trophy SB & commented that he never thought it possible to catch that many big fish in 1 day. 2^nd day was 18 Northern Pike, 6 SB. 3^rd day while struggling through a cold front they still managed to catch 12 Pike & several Smallmouth Bass plus Paul had a very exciting time landing a 28” Tiger Muskie on 6lb test while jigging for Bass. 4^th day they caught over 30+ BIG Smallmouth Bass, including several Trophy fish, each landing a 19”er. Chris also caught his 1^st ever Northern Pike fly-fishing, a nice 28.5” fish. 5^th day was a portage lake adventure for Pike catching over 30 & Chris accomplished his goal landing 10 Pike in a day Fly-Fishing.

Final day had them catching 28 bigger Smallmouth Bass with just a few shorty’s mixed in, several Pike up to 30” & the BIG surprise was Chris hooking into & landing a HUGE 33” Lake Trout. Chris left having a great 1^st experience and Paul counting his days down until his return in August.

7th year with Ken’s brother Dennis 1^st timer, 2^nd timer Anthony Miceli, Somonauk, John Healy, Franklin Park, & Lon Adams, Sandwich, IL both 1^st time at Fireside Lodge. Ken set the pace for the group catching many Smallmouth Bass 14-16” several 17.5” and an 18”

Great Fun Fishing for BIG Smallmouth Bass by Kenny Heflin

Trophy on the DOA. Ken & Dennis did the best on the 1^st day catching many 17.5” Smallmouth Bass & Dennis had 1 Trophy over 18” & Ken caught 3 more. This whole group had a special 2^nd day catching lots of Smallmouth Bass between 15-19”, Anthony & Lon landing 7 Trophies over 18”, Ken having 3 more with 1 at 19”, and John also had a 19”SB. Their 3^rd plus 4^th & final day were full of Smallmouth Bass action catching countless fish between 16 – 17.5”. Total they caught 28 Trophy Bass between 18 to 19.5 inches. John also caught his 1^st & 2^nd Muskie and Dennis landed his 1^st. All had a fabulous time making many fishing memories together.

3^rd time return guests Dan Garry, Willoughby, OH & Neil Newman arrived 1 day before the other 6 members of their group and did well catching 12 Northern Pike in the 30” or better class fly-fishing.

Second day these two had 12 NP by supper before the rest of their group members arrived, Mike Pece, Paul Cardinale & Son Paul from Solon & Mentor, OH Mike Stauffer, Rod Dennison & Dave Caldwell all from the greater Cleveland, OH area. 1^st day for the whole group was slower mostly due to the cold windy day only having temps of 48F at 2PM. For their 3 day stay fishing was good and very good for some, with Mike P landing a number of bigger Pike, Mike S & Dave catching numbers of Pike, Paul & Paul Jr catching 18 in one day & Dan & Neil caught more 30+ Fly Fishing. Neil commented that he had a 4ft+ Muskie open its mouth ready to inhale his fly but turn away at the last second. This would have been a record at Fireside Lodge for a Pike on the Fly. All left having a wonderful stay and plan on return visit.

2^nd Time Return guest Lewie Barber and fishing buddy Ron Baker from Austin, TX started off on the day of arrival with 6 Smallmouth Bass, Ron with 2 over 17” plus a Trophy 18.5”. 1^st day was good action for Smallmouth up to 15”. 2^nd day they caught a lot of Smallmouth up to 17”. 3^rd day had them catching 4 Pike plus many Smallmouth Bass including a number of 15, 16, 17 inches & Ron caught his second trophy Smallmouth Bass over 18 inches. 4^th & final day was great for Smallmouth with Ron landing his 3^rd trophy Smallmouth bass at 18.5 inches plus many more 15-17”. The big bonus was Lewie getting excellent pictures of an adult eagle in the neat with the eaglet. Amazing photo, which is the first captures for the 27 years Audrey and I have owned Fireside Lodge.
