The weather was variable during this time period having many some

beautiful days in the low to mid 70’s but we did have two distinct cold fronts with rain and the second front brought day time highs down to 48 F and a low of 30 F. This seemed to turn on the toothy critters and some big trophies were caught along with many Trophy Smallmouth Bass.

Special Smallmouth Bass Fishing at Fireside Lodge

were back to chase the BIG Smallmouth Bass that roam our waters. 1^st day was a weather-in day for Debra as it was windy, cool, & rainy so Steve faired it alone catching 9 Smallmouth Bass including a 19.5-inch and 18-inch trophy and 6 Northern Pike. 2^nd day despite cold front conditions they managed to catch 24 Smallmouth bass with most on the bigger side up to 17.5 to 18-inches. 3^rd day Steve said they caught a bunch of Smallmouth Bass with a lot over 15-inches up to 18.5-inches.

4^th day was more of the same with a mix of sizes toping out with Steve landing a 19-inch monster Trophy Smallmouth Bass. 5^th day was slower then previous days, and we blamed it on the light SE winds, but they still caught 9 Smallmouth Bass. 6^th day the light SE winds persisted but managed to catch a few more fish. 7^th day was as calculated when talking at breakfast Steve mentioned the wind

had changed to the SW and we figured the Smallmouth Bass would be good in the afternoon. Well they caught only 2 Smallmouth up to 1:00 PM and ended up with 25 by 4:00 PM with some nice fish 16 to 17.5-inches. 8^th and 9^th days they caught about a dozen Smallmouth each day with most in the 15 to 17 inch range plus some Northern Pike. 10^th day Steve lost a huge Smallmouth first thing, and then caught 9 others and several Pike. 11^th day they did very well catching 19 BIG Smallmouth Bass with 4 over 18-inches up to 20-inches. 12^th and 13^th days were not about numbers but excellent quality catching most of their fish 17, 17.5, and an 18-incher weighing 4 pounds. That is a HUGE 18-inch Smallie.

14^th and final day they were faced with windy cold front conditions, temps not expected to get out of the high 50’s. Debra opted out and Steve fished just a partial day alone ending his fishing with two BIG Smallmouth Bass measuring 19.5 and 18.5-inches. Both had a fabulous stay visiting with the other guests and enjoying the wilderness surroundings at Fireside Lodge.

Guest of 20 years, Paul Letourneau from North Oaks, MN returned for his 2^nd trip in 2017 with Spencer Olson from Minneapolis, MN for their traditional August fishing trip. 1^st day they caught both Northern Pike and Smallmouth Bass.

2^nd day they caught some Smallmouth Bass and a lot of Northern Pike casting a trolling. 3^rd day was a good day for Northern Pike but the big fish they were looking for just did not show up. 4^th day was a great day catching over 33 Northern Pike and two nice walleye.

5^th day these two caught some nice Northern Pike to 31-inches and got chased in by thunderstorms. 6^th and final day they were really trying for a trophy fish catching well over 20 Northern Pike but the large trophy fish evaded them this trip.

2^nd year return guests Wade Keiss, David Goacher, and Kurt Koziol respectively from Mount Prospect, Libertyville, and Prospect Heights, IL were glad to be back chasing Northern Pike. DOA in just a few hours of fishing they got a good start catching 12 fish.

1^st full day was very good catching 24 Northern Pike up to 30-inches and 2 Smallmouth Bass. Day 2 was spent exploring a new arm of the lake they have never fished before and the results were not as good as day one, landing 8 Pike, but that’s fishing.

3^rd day the caught 18 Northern Pike and Dave caught a Trophy Smallmouth Bass measuring 18-inches. 4^th and final day they finished strong catching 29 bigger Northern Pike Wade catching the largest measuring 37-inches. All had a great time and hope to return next year.

Return guests Donn, Matthew, and Christopher Seidholz from Omaha, NE were glad to be back. 1^st day was great catching many nice fat Northern Pike using the magic Yo-Zuri suspending twitch bait. They have the pause technique down to a science getting most fish to hit on or just after the pause.

2^nd day was a great day catching many numbers of Northern Pike and a nice walleye. The also enjoyed a fabulous shore lunch taking about 2.5 hours enjoying the whole experience cooking over an open fire on a beautiful day. 3^rd and final day they had a blast fishing and just making great conversation. Fishing is one of the best ways to reunite and being that these three are traveling their opportunity to see each other is slim. All left having a wonderful stay, making some special father & son memoires and thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge for your family fishing destination.

 

First Trophy Smallmouth Bass in Canada by Matt Measured by Chris

Returning to Fireside Lodge for their 4^th consecutive year were Reed Thacker and Todd Cambron from Indianola, IA. DOA the caught 15+ Smallmouth Bass several Northern Pike and had several large follows, 1^st day They caught a good quantity of both Northern Pike and Smallmouth Bass plus they saw a few of the big fish they are after. 2^nd day they caught 18 total fish and it was again a mix of Smallmouth and Northern Pike with that trophy still evading them. After some discussion and tackle purchases from our tackle shop they were off for their 3^rd and last day of fishing. Well they had a good day catching both Smallmouth Bass and Northern Pike on the new lures they purchased and Reed was especially impressed with the Yo-Zuri he bought as it not only caught a bunch of Pike but he had two large Muskie follows on this lure. Both left as fast as they came saying they had an absolutely fabulous stay and intend on returning again in 2018.

19^th consecutive year to chase BIG toothy critters. DOA when Bob was catching a small pike and HUGE Muskie came up and took a swipe at it hung around a little the disappeared. Bob said it was very large at least 45 to 48-inches. 1^st day Bob had a good day catching all the fish and Jane did and excellent job making sure Bob’s fish got into the net.

 2^nd day it was almost the reverse with Jane having the hot hand catching most of the fish. 3^rd day things equaled out with both Jane & Bob catching a bunch of sizable Northern Pike. The only difference was that in picture taking end of things Bob focused a little too much on the fish and not enough on Jane (see photo). The only hope of seeing Jane’s head was Photoshop. 4^th day was very rainy but very active catching many Northern Pike the Biggest going to Bob at 38-inches and Jane’s largest was 35-inches with many 30+.

5^th and final day they had a very good day catching lots of Northern Pike finishing their trip on a high note. Also, as usual they had great conversations with guests the already knew and met a few new Fireside Friends.

2nd Trophy Northern Pike Fishing by Bryan in Canada

Bryan Neel lll and Tim Stewart from Rochester, MN returned for their 2^nd trip this year and for the 15th consecutive year to hunt BIG Northern Pike & Muskie. These two did very well on day 1 catching 21 Northern Pike and 10 Smallmouth Bass and Tim had a huge, approximate 45-inch Trophy Northern pike get off when it took off suddenly under the boat plus he landed an 18-inch Trophy Smallmouth Bass.

2^nd day was fabulous catching many Northern Pike up to 1:30PM

3rd over 40-inch Trophy Northern Pike Fishing at Fireside Lodge

and Bryan had a terrific fight from a Muskie on his hands that he ended up landing measuring in at 45-inches. 3^rd day was a very rainy day with a cold front but the Northern Pike turned on catching 38 total, with ten being 33-inches or better, and Bryan landed a huge 40-inch Trophy. 4^th day had them catching a few less fish than the day before all being good size and for the third day in a row Bryan caught a Trophy Fish this being a 42-inch very heavy Northern Pike. 5^th day had them catching 25 Northern Pike and a Tiger Muskie and for the fourth consecutive day Bryan caught a Trophy Toothy Critter this Northern Pike measuring is at 40.5-inches and Tim caught another Trophy Smallmouth Bass at 18-inches.

6^th day was a little slower, still catching Pike, but they were not as aggressive as the previous days. 7^th day they explored new areas catching about 20 Northern Pike. 8^th and final day was great catching 24 Northern Pike of all sizes, Tim caught a Trophy Smallmouth Bass at 18-icnhes plus a very large bodied 37-inch Tiger Muskie. Both had fabulous stay and enjoyed the last evening watching the beautiful sunset from their deck. Upon departure Tim said see ya in 6 months.

Long time guest Gary Johnson from Midlothian, IL returned for his 3^rd trip this year this time with sons Josh, and Charlie who joined them on Tuesday evening. First day out was a short but they caught some nice Northern Pike and Gary caught a HUGE Trophy Smallmouth Bass on a classic lure, The Road Runner.

The 2^nd day, had Charlie joining them catching Northern Pike and Gary caught a very nice heavy Muskie measuring 38.5-inches. 3^rd day was a post cold front day catching-11 Northern Pike.

4^th and final day was terrific catching 30 fish, 6 Smallmouth Bass all Big, and two were Trophy Size caught by Gary. The remaining fish were nice size Northern Pike and with Josh landing a large 41-inch Trophy Northern Pike. All left making some wonderful father and son memories and intend on returning in 2018.

Special Note: This is our final fishing report for 2017 so Audrey and I would like to thank all of our guests from this year and the last 28-years for making the success we have had a Fireside Lodge possible. It is all of you that bring energy to Fireside Lodge and make it come alive. Also all the friendships we have developed with our guests is way beyond our expectations, and we thank you all for making that possible. As I write this we are hard at work already preparing for the opening of or 29^th fishing season in 2018 which is looking to be very active. We have been receiving an unusual number of early reservations and for those of you planning to visit us in 2018 you may want to start early so your preferred dates are available. With that we wish you all a wonderful fall and winter, Thanks Audrey and Alan.

Excellent Trophy Smallmouth Bass Fishing at Fireside Lodge in Canada

It was a fabulous week with the weather being in the low to upper 70’s on most days, with one cool day having a little moisture and wind. All had fun and the fishing was very good on most days with the windy day being a bit of a challenge for most.

Here for their first time were Ken & Ginger Sprague from Indianapolis, IN. 1^st day on the lake they fished as they learned new

waters catching some Smallmouth Bass and Northern Pike. 2^nd day was productive with Ginger catching Smallmouth Bass up to 17.5-inches and Ken caught Northern Pike. 3^rd day after talking at the tackle shop and deciding that they should try to position themselves in a certain depth of water

while fishing similar areas they did very well with Ginger taking care of the Smallmouth department catching some nice Smallies up to 17.5 inches and Ken had the Pike touch catching all Northern Pike. 

 4^th day was very windy which caused some boat control issues but they caught some pike and smallmouth with Ginger losing a very large Smallmouth when it jumped and threw her lure back at her. 5^th day they had a ball catching Smallmouth Bass and Northern Pike with the magic lure since they arrived being a Mepps Spinner with a red and white blade.

Last day was Very rainy and windy as a cold front moved in and being very satisfied with their fishing over the last 5 days they returned to the dock by mid morning and called it a day spending the rest of their time just enjoying their very comfortable accommodations in our wilderness setting. Before departing they talked about returning with another couple n 2018.

Long time Guest Bill Aulenbach from Barberton, OH returned solo for his 12^th trip with us at Fireside Lodge. 1^st day was great catching many Northern Pike up to 33-inches, discovering the challenge of landing a fishing without help, but doing a fine job. 2^nd and 3^rd day Bill did well catching Northern Pike on what he described to be an ugly lure. It was a blue, red, and yellow Jake but as ugly as it is a big Smallmouth Bass even attacked it, jumped, spitting the lure out and waving goodbye to Bill with it’s tail.

4th day before returning at noon hour for some lunch and a rest Bill got into a bunch of Northern Pike on a spoon dressed with a yellow twister tail. 5^th day Bill, despite the inclement weather of rain & wind, got into a flurry of activity catching one Northern Pike after another until he hooked a 160 pounder, himself making him come back to get a little first aid. After that and seeing the weather getting worse he called it a day. 6^th and final day was post cold front conditions, but Bill still caught Northern Pike. Bill left self-satisfied that at 85 he was able to make another fishing trip and did well catching his favorite fish Northern Pike. Upon departing he was hopeful to make it back next year with his son Mike.

with us at Fireside Lodge and for their 2^nd time were John & Monica’s son Dan & wife Crystal from Rock Mount, VA. 1^st day on the water they did very well catching 28+ nice Smallmouth Bass with John landing a HUGE Trophy 19-inch Smallmouth Bass, and Monica caught one 17.5-inches. The fish kept them busy enough just making the dinning room hours.

2^nd day was windy but they still managed to catch 16 Smallmouth Bass and several Northern Pike. 3^rd day was a good day for all 4 catching Smallmouth Bass and Dan was getting much more comfortable operating the boat for his first time. 4^th day Monica and John had a very good day catching Smallmouth Bass even though it was a windy, rainy, cold front day, catching a good number of 16-17.5-inchers and Monica caught an 18.5-inch Trophy. Crystal & Dan did well on Northern Pike and Dan landed his first Muskie.

5^th day was post cold front so the numbers were down a bit but Jon & Monica still caught Smallmouth 16 to 17.5 inches and John caught 2-30-inch Northern Pike while Monica lost a very large Pike. Dan & Crystal caught Northern Pike. Next day had Crystal and Dan taking a new adventure to a portage lake having a terrific day catching Smallmouth Bass with Crystal being hot catching two 19-inch Smallmouth Bass and had a BIG Muskie on that had her rod doubled over feeling like it was going the break her hand, as well as the rod, the fish coming unhooked under the boat. John and Monica again caught a lot of Smallmouth Bass, John coming up with an 18-inch Trophy and Monica finally caught a fish on her whopper plopper.

7^th day was the final one for Dan & Crystal doing fantastic easily catching over 30 fish mostly Smallmouth Bass with some Northern Pike. 8^th day John and Monica missed not having Dan & Crystal around and their fishing was a little slower however they still caught several 17-17.5-inch Smallmouth and Monica caught an 18-icnh Trophy. 9^th and final day they relaxed a bit more just to absorb the wonderful wilderness surroundings, that John says makes him feels so good. They only fished for a few hours with Monica catching all the fish. Their departure was sad but also glad at the thought of their possible return.

At Fireside Lodge for their 1^st time were Father David Cornwell and two sons Kyle and Ian from New Lenox, IL and North Liberty, IA. DOA fishing for just 90-minutes before suppertime had Ian catching a BIG Northern Pike smashing his lure about 10 feet from the boat while he was doing some adjustment on the trolling motor which means the pause got the fish to hit.

1^st day these three did great catching both Northern Pike & Smallmouth Bass with Kyle having the hot hand using a 5 of diamonds spoon. They described the Pike as sizable and Kyle caught an 18-inch Master Anglers Award Trophy Smallmouth Bass. They also sighted a few BIG Muskie following their lure.

2^nd day Kyle again continued his hot streak catching an even bigger

Northern Pike Fishing ia a Blast at Fireside Lodge by Ian

trophy Smallmouth Bass measuring 19-inches and had a HUGE Northern Pike to the boat, but it got off at the last second. 3^rd day was a fabulous adventure going to one of our creek accessible lakes and hooking up on at least 40 Northern Pike landing slightly over half, with most if the others lost at the boat plus Ian & Kyle both caught Trophy Smallmouth Bass measuring 18.5 & 18 inches respectively. 4^th day was a super day actually catching over 40 Northern Pike, having many misses, and most were on a Buzz Bait or Spinner Bait fast retrieved very close to the surface.

5^th day had them enjoying a shore lunch and catching some bigger Pike. Ian lost a HUGE fish after a few hard runs just shaking the lure loose. 6^th and final day consisted of only a half day of fishing catching some good Northern Pike before they had to pack up for their return trip home. Taking with David he expressed that the fishing experience with us at Fireside Lodge was the best ever, and memories with his sons priceless.

A guest since 1995, Jack Hires from Valparaiso, IN returned bringing a friend and first tine Fireside Lodge guest Eric Graham from Chesterton, IN. Here to primarily Fly-Fish 1^st day out these two did well catching both Smallmouth bass and Northern Pike Fly-Fishing. Because of the windy rainy weather their fishing was limited but they did catch some nice Northern Pike and Smallmouth Bass with Jack landing the largest fish of its class being a 17.5-inch Smallmouth Bass. 3^rd day was a very cool windy day with rain on and off which limited their production.

4^th day had Jack taking a day off for some rest, and deservingly being 85-years young. So Eric fished solo and realized how important a boat partner can be when catching fish as he did well with Northern Pike and enjoyed the challenge of fishing and landing fish himself. 5^th day Eric found some nice Northern Pike right where they should be, in 10 to 16 feet of water with access to deep water. The 6^th and final day 

--> Eric, fishing alone caught, some great Northern Pike and mastered taking a fish photo when fishing alone. Both departed having a great time fishing and socializing with others in the dinning room.

 

Windy Day Northern Pike Fishing at Fireside Lodge in Canada

Bob Duncan, Chris Hillard, Dick Niemann, and Bob Koehler respectively from Walnut Creek, Carkspur, Santa Rosa, CA and Naples FL, all fraternity brothers from college were fishing at Fireside Lodge for their first time. 1^st day they tested the waters catching some fish but still needing some advise. 2^nd day following some fishing advise they caught many more fish wit Chris catching his 1^st ever Northern Pike plus many more and the others all caught fish. 3^rd day was super good for these guys who were just learning about fishing in the north for Northern Pike. They all caught Pike mostly on lures purchased from our tackle shop, Chris caught 6, Bob 9, Bob K about the same, and Dick caught his first Northern Pike ever which was cause for celebration, which they did before and during suppertime. 4^th day was a super good day as they all caught a lot of Northern Pike. This group had very little experience fishing for Northern Pike if any, with three catching their first ever so they were thrilled when they discovered trolling was productive catching more fish than they ever imagined. We also had a special celebration for Chris as it was his 67^th birthday. 5^th day was very windy and all returned early having some success but the weather gave them a good reason to just sit on the deck of their cabin to reminisce about the past 5 days, and 49 years spending time together, Thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge to spend special time together making memories among long time friends.

Paul, MN returned for their 2^nd consecutive year. 1^st day John & Don spent their time throwing large lures in search of BIG fish having some follows but no takers while David and Robert went after numbers catching 31 Northern Pike and several Smallmouth Bass with David landing an 18.5-inch Master Anglers Award Trophy Smallmouth Bass.

2^nd day they all went Muskie hunting doing very well. They had a lot of follows, and caught three Muskie. Robert also caught a Big Northern Pike in the 36-inch range. 3^rd day was  fun day catching some Pike and chasing the BIG toothy critters around. 4^th and final day Robert & Don had a special day Muskie fishing catching one each, Robert had a double follow by two 35 to 37-inch Muskie, they also had a 45-inch Plus follow, came back later

and it followed again, third time not, and Robert while catching a Smallmouth Bass had his line break, but he managed to be quick enough to grab his line and hand line the fish to the net. David & John also had a fun day with John having his best day of the trip. All went home making great father & sons / brother memories and John mentioned a possible return in 2018.
