Fireside Lodge Fishing Report 7/21 to 8/4 2012

Fireside Lodge Fishing Report 7/21 to 8/4 2012

BIG 40" Musky Fishing by Myself at Fireside Lodge Canada
The weather could not be anymore stable, as we have had most days in the low to mid 80’s & mostly sunny. We did have threats of T-storms with a few near misses, which came close enough to chase the fishers off the lake.

Women Fishing for Smallmouth Bass at Fireside Lodge Canada
Bill & Rosanna Goodwin, from Wilmington, DE returned to Fireside Lodge for their 9th time. DOA & the first day Bill & Rosanna found some nice Smallmouth Bass, 17 of them, in some of there favorite spots. You could tell they both enjoyed being back in the wilderness fishing for Smallmouth Bass. After having a slower afternoon fishing Bill dropped Rosanna off for some personal time, and Bill went right back out fishing. One of Bill’s favorite lures for Smallmouth Bass is a #5 Shad Rap fishing with a lightweight rod and 6lb test line. First cast after dropping Rosanna off, a BIG 40” Tiger Musky, not knowing this was Bill’s Smallmouth Bass lure, hit it hard & the fight was on. After 25 minutes of Bill struggling to bring this feisty fish to the boat with no leader, he was able to land it. Thinking he would never have a chance to land this big Tiger Musky he got some great pictures of it in the water while fighting it near the boat. Bill said his heart was pumping full of excitement. Great catch and Terrific story.

Many BIG Smallmouth Bass Fishing at Fireside Lodge Canada
Third day was a great day catching 18 nice Smallmouth Bass & the fourth day was almost a carbon copy but all were bigger fish with Rosanna landing the biggest of the day at 17.5”. 5th day was a 13 fish day with a mix of 8 Smallmouth Bass and 5 Northern Pike. Rosanna had the biggest Pike at 29” & both said they had a “GREAT” Day on the water fishing. 6th day was a wonderful day as they enjoyed their last day in the Canadian Wilderness catching a few fish & just soaking up the natural beauty surrounding them. Both had a great stay and made a few new Fireside friends.

Lot of Trophy Smallmouth Bass Fishing at Fireside Lodge
Father and son Alan & Jon Wohlman from Northbrook & Glenview, IL returned for their 10th time. First day had these two catching 21 fish before supper, mostly Smallmouth Bass & a few Pike. Second day was almost a carbon copy of he first except they caught bigger Smallmouth. Third day was even better than the first two catching well over 30 Smallmouth Bass with some Pike mixed in & the bass were all 14 to 18-inches. They found themselves having to go slightly deeper to get the bigger Smallies. Fourth day had them catching fewer Smallmouth Bass but a few more Pike & Jon caught a nice Tiger Muskie. Their last two days were terrific fishing, as they caught many bigger Smallmouth Bass. Even though we had pouring rain on their last day the fishing seemed to turn on right after the heavy rain. One day while eating supper in the dinning room Audrey asked how Alan & Jon’s day was and I thought Alan gave the best reply saying “Audrey it was a fabulous day because I was able to fish all day today with my son”. Great answer Alan as it puts everything in perspective. Both had a wonderful stay, & we discussed possible dates for 2013 before their departure.

Many Giant Trophy Smallmouth Bass Fishing in Canada
Ed Burns & Todd Smith from College Station & Mckinney, TX returned for their annual fishing trip at Fireside Lodge since 1998. First day they caught about 50 Northern Pike and 10 BIG Smallmouth with Ed coming up with the catch of the day, a HUGE 19.5” Trophy Smallmouth Bass. That evening Todd caught more fish & losing a huge Northern Pike while Ed enjoyed the company of the lodge. 2nd day had them catching many Smallmouth Bass but Todd said it involved a lot of moving around catching only a few fish in each spot. That’s the advantage of having experience on the lake system & being able to fish a lot of spots. 3rd day was very similar catching a lot of fish but having no numbers in any one spot until late in the day where they nailed 15 fish within 30-40 minutes. In all they had good numbers day with some nice size fish but no monsters. 4th and final day was very similar to the 2nd & 3rd as the fish just kept adding up all day, catching just a few in each location, but by the end of the day they caught a lot of fish, both Northern Pike & Smallmouth Bass. Both had another good trip & hope to return in 2013.

1st Tiger Musky Fishing for Smallmouth Bass at Fireside Lodge Canada
Tyler Tennant from League City, TX with Father–In-Law Peter Higman from Libertyville, IL returned for their annual trip with us at Fireside Lodge for their 8th time. First day they caught a bunch of Smallmouth Bass & some nice Northern Pike, with each landing the fish they always come for, Musky. Pete caught the largest at 32”. 2nd day was a terrific Muskie day having plenty of Follows and landing 4 up to 34”. WOW, that’s 6 Musky in two days!! During their next 4 days they had one challenging day, but the other three were very good catching a lot of Smallmouth Bass & Northern Pike plus another two Musky. WOW!!! 8 Muskie landed in 6 days of fishing. Side Story: While Tyler was catching a big 16.5” Smallmouth a huge Musky came out of nowhere and grabbed the bass. This only lasted for less than a minute but was very exciting for Tyler & Peter to see. There last day they ended on a high note catching numerous BIG Smallmouth Bass while fishing for & catching toothy critters in the weeds. They had another great stay & hope to return next year.

Great 1st Smallmouth Bass Fishing Trip at Fireside Lodge Canada
Father & son Samuel & Michael Clay from Catersville & Euhorlea, GA were at Fireside Lodge & fishing Canada for their first time. DOA for a few hours before supper they caught 6 Smallmouth & a Pike, with Mike catching a very large 17.5” Smallie. Great start! They started their first day with catching some Smallmouth Bass before breakfast and Mike lost a big fish. Thinking he was snagged, the snag started to move, and after both had a good look at the fish it ran and shook loose. They ended up with a GREAT first day by catching well over 40 Smallmouth. 2nd day it was 7 nice Smallies before breakfast, and by noon they had landed close to 20. 3rd day was about 20 Smallmouth but the real show was watching Mike land a 36” Northern Pike on an ultra light pole, 6lb test & no leader. Now that’s skill?? Last 4 days they kept up catching many Smallmouth Bass and Mike lost 4 Huge Smallmouth right at the boat. Both had a “GREAT” father & son fishing trip & left wanting to return in the near future.

Terrific Smallmouth Bass Fishing in Ontario Canada
Good friends Frank Poehlman & Michael Coble from Schwenksville & Phoenixville, PA returned for their second year in a row. 1st day was a very good Smallmouth Bass day as they caught many along with a few Northern Pike. Smallmouth Bass fishing was good for their second day in a row finding a very productive new area. 3rd day had them portaging for Muskie & Smallmouth Bass. Well, the Musky showed but would not commit to any of the presentations Frank & Mike used. Smallmouth Bass were a different story as Mike had the hot hand catching a mix of sizes along with a beauty 17.5”, over 3lb’er. Both had a wonderful day fishing the wilderness lake, & their best story was while boating back to the lodge they came across a wolf swimming. No pictures were taken as they just sat back and enjoyed the moment. 4th day had Frank hot with Bass on the surface, and later that day Mike picked up his pace catching & landing some nice Smalllmouth 17-17.5”. 5th & 6th days were very similar catching some nice Smallmouth bass 15-17” along with a few Pike. Also, Mike ended up landing a nice Tiger Muskie. Both had a great stay & hope to return in 2014.

Ladies Fishing for Trophy Smallmouth Bass at Fireside Lodge Canada
Long time guests Bill & Jill Westbrook from New Philadelphia, OH returned for their 10th consecutive trip to Fireside Lodge. 1st day they caught 15+ Smallmouth Bass 12-15”. 2nd day was fabulous catching over 35 Smallmouth Bass a lot 15-17.5”. Third day was even better catching many Smallmouth again up to 17”. They caught 3 Master Anglers Award trophy Smallmouth with Jill landing an 18”er & Bill had an 18” & GIANT 19.5” Smallie. Both were all smiles in the dinning room at suppertime. Fourth day was tough weather wise, as soon after getting on the water they were dumped on by heavy rain & it drove them off the water. Bill did return later to catch some nice Pike. Fifth & final day had them only fishing from 9am – 2 pm doing very well catching 22 Smallmouth 15-17”. Both had a wonderful stay and hope to return with more family members in 2013.

Fireside Lodge Fishing Report 7/14 to 7/21 2012

Ladies BIG Northern Pike Fishing at Fireside Lodge Canada

Talk about stable weather patterns, except for one night of very heavy rain which started at 10:45PM until about 5:00AM which made bailing our boats a challenge, the weather for the last three weeks has been picture perfect with sun and mostly calm, with a few windy afternoons mixed in. Some were a little on the warm side but 15-20 degrees cooler than anywhere were our guests were traveling from.

George Carney & father-in-law Tom Miller from Madison, WI returned for their 9th consecutive year. DOA they got right back into their grove catching many Northern Pike, 21 to be exact. 1st day was more Northern Pike with a lot of Smallmouth Bass. George said most of the Smallmouth were big, catching them on a white spinner bait in the weeds when fishing for Pike. 2nd day heavy rain & T-storms lasted all night long up to 10 AM. The day however ended up being very good fishing for Northern Pike catching between 26 up to 30”, with Tom having the hot hand after Supper. The Big catch on their 4th day was the opportunity to not only see a baby Moose but be able to view it for 15-20 minutes. Definitely one memory this family will carry with them forever. 5th day was a terrific day fishing and catching as they landed 41 Northern Pike. WOW!! David Jewell, Wendell Hill, & Bob Nutter from Pineville, Foster, & Clarksburg, WV returned for their 4th time. DOA they visited some of their old spots as a few fish said hello to them. 1st day they were Musky hunting and had some follows with Wendell making contact and landing a nice 32”er. All had fun seeing the follows in anticipation of catching “the big one” and all were plenty tired at the end of the day. Bob said he felt like he just pitched 5 complete games. 2nd day started early before breakfast catching a few Smallies on the surface. That was just the beginning of an action packed day catching lots of Northern Pike. Just David & Bob alone caught over 80 along with a few Smallmouth saying that most of the fish were heavier, 28 to 32 inches. Wendell also caught about 30 & many of these fish were caught on buzz baits. 3rd day started with some Smallmouth before breakfast, David catching a trophy 19”er. That’s the way to start a day!!! The rest of the day was not as active as the day before but almost all the fish they caught were bigger & David came up with another trophy 18” Master Anglers Award Smallmouth. 4th day all they could do when I asked them how their fishing was is to smile and say it was so good it was impossible to count. Saying they caught countless Northern Pike with some Smallmouth mixed in. 5th & final day was a fabulous Smallmouth Bass day with the group catching 74, having a lot in the 15-17 Range, & David caught his 4th Master Anglers Award Smallmouth. Fred and Ewell also did great catching 9 Smallmouth Bass & 19 Northern Pike. Next day Adam purchased an old time lure, a simple Dardevle spoon, & him and Nicole were off to a portage lake for Muskie. Well, they had a blast having 10-12 follows and Adam hooked up with a HUGE over 40” Muskie that ended up breaking him off right at the boat. Guess what lure he was using. That Dardevle spoon he bought. They also caught some Smallmouth Bass and Adam lost a huge one as it also dove under the boat. Fred & Ewell did well catching 18 Smallmouth Bass all on the bigger side from 15 to 17.5”. 3rd & final day Fred & Ewell caught 18 Smallmouth Bass and a few Pike & their bass were mostly large fish. GIANT Trophy Smallmouth Bass Fishing at Fireside Lodge in Canada
Art & Judy Altick from Springfield, OH, joined us at Fireside Lodge for their first time. 1st day was spent feeling out the lake system catching a few. Second day they did really well catching Smallmouth Bass with the Original Floating Rapala. Doesn’t get anymore traditional than that. Both had a fun day and before supper had some music time. Art decided to buy a few larger, #18 Floating Rapala lures and try them trolling for Northern Pike in slightly deeper water. Well, Art was right on with his choice and presentation as they caught plenty of bigger Pike with this method. They also took some time to fish for Smallmouth Bass catching a few larger fish with Judy catching a Trophy size Smallmouth bass over 18-inches. They also made some friends during their 4-day stay. This seems to just happen naturally at Fireside Lodge as people meet and talk in the lodge and dinning room during mealtime. Both left having a wonderful time and discussed the possibility of a family trip next year.

Fabulous Fishing for Big Muskie at Fireside Lodge in Canada

Master Anglers 18" Trophy Smallmouth Bass at Fireside Lodge
Family of Mike, Sue, & Andy Pritzl from Caledonia & Racine, WI returned for Mike & Andy’s 7th time and Sue’s 1st. DOA before supper Mike & Andy caught 11 fish including 4 species, a Perch, Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, and Mike caught a Musky. Great start catching a Musky so soon!! 1st full day they fished for Musky most of the day having follows and Andy had a nice fish on, but in the end the fish won the battle and got off. 2nd day was a terrific day of fishing catching 45 Northern Pike and 5 Smallmouth Bass with Mike landing a trophy Smallmouth Bass measuring just over 18-inches. Third & final day found them searching for Muskie and catching some Smallmouth and Northern Pike along the way. They did contact that Musky during their search and Mike ended up finishing the trip as he started it by landing a 34” very heavy bodied Musky, his personal best. Sue not being a fisher really enjoyed her stay being with her family in our wonderful wilderness setting. She spent time reading with a fabulous view of the lake, enjoyed mealtime with Mike & Andy, and shared in the memories of what has become a traditional fishing trip between Mike & Andy. Thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge, and upon departing Mike said to me “we’ll see you next year”.

41 Northern Pike in a day with my Dad & Brother Fishing at Fireside Lodge

Great Experience Fishing at Fireside Lodge in Canada with my Dad & Brother
David Minson and his son’s Jonathan & Stephen from Burlington, Ontario returned for their second time. DOA they caught Smallmouth Bass & Northern Pike before supper. First day on the water was slower as they searched and fished some new and unknown areas. 2nd day they decided to take and adventure portaging to a lake they never tried before. Well, at suppertime the excitement was so obvious that I knew they had an exciting day even before I asked. First before they even started fishing, only walking about 20 yards down the portage trail, they came across a big pile of fresh Bear scat right in the middle of the trail. We did have a discussion about Bears and how not to worry as they usually hear you & run off, however talk in the dinning room is just that, talk. They all got over it and proceeded on & all three were accounted for at suppertime. They had a fantastic day fishing, catching 41 Northern Pike, and having seemingly continuous action, & also had several doubles & one triple. That evening after supper they also did good catching some Northern Pike & Smallmouth Bass getting a lot of surface hits. Banner day of fishing for this family as their smiles told the whole story. 3rd and final day had them searching another new lake floating through a small creek to do so. They caught some Smallmouth Bass and saw many HUGE Smallies that just would not bite. They also had some Musky follows and two in particular, one a large Tiger Musky and another a GIANT Musky, which kept following there lures and just hung around the boat. Very exciting to see these fish up close. That last evening they finished in great style catching more Pike and Smallmouth Bass & having some great action. All left having made father & sons memories, which will last all their lives, and thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge to make some of your special family memories.

Fireside Lodge Fishing Report 7/7 to 7/14 2012

HUGE 45-inch Tiger Musky caught Fishing at Fireside Lodge Canada

Mostly beautiful but a bit too warm at times is what best described the weather for this week. Even though we have been warmer than normal our guests were still able to escape the heat no matter where they traveled from.

Great Smallmouth Bass caught at Fireside Lodge Canada

Jerry & Susan Florea from Martinville, OH were excited to be fishing with us for their first time. Here for 4 days this couple thoroughly
enjoyed there time spent in our wonderful wilderness setting. They had a BLAST the first two days exploring Little Vermilion Lake as they caught some nice Northern Pike & Smallmouth Bass & they really enjoyed having lunch at Twin Falls. Third day brought them on their best Northern Pike fishing ever, landing 16 and one Smallmouth Bass, plus they had a lot of fish hooked that never made it to the boat. Fourth & final day was concentrated on catching Muskie and exploring new waters, Cedarbough Lake. Both ended up hooking a Muskie and Jerry landed a nice 34” Musky. Goal accomplished. This couple also had just as much fun sighting an eagle a day, watching the activity of Beavers, viewing an Otter catching fresh water clams and dinning while floating on its back. Talking about fresh water clams, Jerry while bouncing an X-Rap on the bottom like he does at home for Largemouth, he felt something different, & after bringing the lure back to the boat he found a freshwater Clam clamped onto one of the treble hooks. So it was decided to give Jerry the first ever Mater Anglers Award for hooking & landing a freshwater clam on and artificial lure. Both had a “FABULOUS” stay with us, as we did getting to know Jerry & Susie.
BIG Smallmouth Bass in Canada are a Blast

Swimming & Fishing at Fireside Lodge Canada
Joe & Marilyn Foos from Alpharetta, GA we back for their 4th consecutive year. DOA they got into fish quickly catching some Smallmouth on the surface & Marilyn caught a nice Northern Pike & had a Smallmouth jump and spit her hook out. Fun action for just a few hours before supper. 1st day was GREAT as they caught lots of Northern Pike, & could have caught them all day long but decided to switch to Smallmouth Bass. They caught a few and enjoyed the search. 3rd day they found it slower struggling a little, but don’t we all have fishing days like that? 4th day was gangbusters catching many Northern Pike & Smallmouth Bass & Joe landed a Master Anglers Award Bass. Also, Marilyn has been able to swim at lunch every day so far, that means it’s very warm, or better yet down right hot. 5th day was another GREAT day fishing as they targeted Smallmouth, and even though they had to fight off the Northern Pike, they did catch a lot of Bass ranging from 14 to 18”. There last three days they did well every day catching countless Northern Pike, with Joe also focusing on bigger Smallmouth Bass. We talked about some specific areas that might be better for this & Joe & Marilyn went out and searched, finding some really great Smallies. One day in particular the caught many larger Smallmouth while fishing through the Pike. This was a banner trip as Joe joined Marilyn swimming at lunch twice, which he never did before. Both had a fabulous stay with us and reserved their dates for the 2013 season.

HUGE Smallmouth Bass Fishing Lakes in Canada

Trophy Smallmouth Bass caught Fishing at Fireside Lodge
First time guests Rob, Tony, Peter, Aaron, Chris Mitchell, Joe Ingallinera, & Billy Doran from Glen Ellyn, Warrenville, & Rolling Meadow, IL, Benton, NH, Grover MO, & Kerrville, TX were ready to hit the water when they arrived. For just a few hours before supper all got a little familiar with he lake and caught fish, a mix of Pike & Smallies. 1st day Aaron led the pack by catching 17 Smallmouth with the others catching anywhere from 5-10 fish, mostly on sinking worms. 2nd day Rob had the edge catching 13 Smallmouth before supper and the others had 5-10 each. 3rd day this group had their best day ever catching about 150 Northern Pike and some terrific Smallmouth Bass, with Rob landing his biggest ever at 19”. 4th day had them searching for Muskie, but being a hot sunny day this was not working so they changed over to Smallmouth catching some, but in comparison it was a slower day. 5th & final day Rob & Tony targeted Smallmouth Bass breaking out the fly rods for the first three hours without much catching success. They would follow the fly presentation after which Rob & Tony would throw out a sinking worm, and catch the fish. They started using the sinking worms, and as Tony said they stayed busy for 4 hours catching Smallmouth Bass. That’s a great afternoon. The others went toothy critter hunting catching 25-30 pike per boat, but the top story of the day involved Pete. Pete is of the age he now has a bucket list, and one of the top things on that list was to catch a Musky. Well, nobody could have planned this out if they tried as within the last hour of calling it a day/trip, Pete tied into a BIG fish. After a mishap with the net Chris went down to grab it as Billy held onto Chris to keep him from falling in the lake. Well, Chris came up with the fish in hands, a 45” Tiger Muskie caught by Pete with a 2-point assist by Chris. WOW!!! What a terrific catch with a story to match, which will last in this families memories forever. GREAT going Pete, and second that for Chris & Billy. All left having a FABULOSU stay with us and hope to see them again.

Great Northern Pike Fishing at Fireside Lodge in Canada
A Group of 20 coordinated by Horace Phillips from Oklahoma City, OK were Son Perry, Tom Green, Tim Turner, Stephen Buchanan, Kenneth Butler, Craig Turner, Kenneth Taylor, Jeremy Whitson, Paul Parker, George Elassal, Robert Murrell, Van Shelton, Gary Bunch, Dan, Dave, & David Stewart, Lacey Butler, and Steven Cupit with 11 year old Ethan from Oklahoma City, Newalla, Blanchard, Okaache, Choctaw, Edmond, Tanliequan, & Enid, OK, Fort Smith & Pea Ridge, AR, Canyon & Denison, TX. Giving this group a lake & equipment orientation seemed more like a seminar as the whole group gathered around several large lakes maps getting familiar with our lakes and what they have to offer. After the orientation all were ready to fish. That they certainly did for 4 days, just about non-stop. Here are some examples of daily catches by this group, & remember that for 16 of them it was their very first time fishing at Fireside Lodge and the other 4 were only here once. My 1st Trophy Musky Fishing at Fireside Lodge Canada

Cal Hulst, son Patrick with his son/grandson Ryan and Ryan’s friend Bob from Holland, MI were fishing at Fireside Lodge for their first time. First few days they felt their way around the lake system catching some nice Smallmouth Bass and Northern Pike, with Patrick coming up with a great big Smallmouth Bass at 17.5”, and Ryan had the catch of his life, & most fishers lifetime, landing a HUGE 42” Musky. The excitement in Ryan’s face when describing his experience at suppertime was priceless. The picture you see here is worth a thousand words. Each day got better as they learned the lake, and their catching results showed, catching more nice Smallmouth Bass, and on their last day had great Northern Pike fishing & catching as they landed at about 20 Northern Pike in each boat. All left having a great family fishing vacation and logging some fabulous family memories. Thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge.

Terrific Fishing at Fireside Lodge for BIG Smallmouth Bass Canada

First time guests Bob & Carolyn Hicks from Richmond, VA were referred to us by a previous guest Jeff Perry also from VA. 1st day they caught some nice Smallmouth and a few Pike. 2nd day was a bit slow fishing but they did catch some Smallmouth and enjoyed visiting Twin Falls area. Third and final day had them doing very well catching a lot of Northern Pike, after experiencing our very own jungle cruise ride. That evening, their last, Jerry went out by himself to enjoy the beautiful evening and fly-fish for Smallmouth Bass. He was very successful having a lot of action on a surface popper and caught several nice Smallmouth Bass. Jerry left not believing how fast their time sped by and wishing they had a few more days.

Youth Fishing for BIG Smallmouth Bass in Canada

Mark McDermotte from Chicago, IL returned for his 5 trip in 6 years, & this year had his son Sean for his 2nd time. Mark brings each of his three children to Fireside Lodge, one at a time, alternating years.  1st day they caught about 12 Northern Pike. 2nd day had them catching over 30 Pike and a few Smallmouth Bass, with Sean landing a beauty 17” Smallie. 3rd day had them catching a good number of Northern Pike and searching for that BIG toothy critter. In doing so they tried some new locations and located some BIG fish. Now that locations were established it’s all about timing. On their last day and a half they continued their quest for the big fish, catching some nice size Pike along the way, but just could not hook up on a monster Pike or Musky. Mark felt that the weather was just too warm and stable to have the percentages swing in the anglers direction. Mark did have an over 40” Musky blow up on a lure while doing a figure 8 but he set the hook in the wrong direction, pulling the lure right out of the fishes mouth. Both had a great stay with us, made another set of father & son fishing memories, and also Mark made his reservations for 2013. Thanks to Mark for making Fireside Lodge your place to make memories with your children.
BIG Smallmouth Bass Fishing in Canada BIG Smile

Jeffery & Kathryn Bernel from LaPorte, IN were at Fireside Lodge for their first fishing trip. First day on the lake was an adventure for these two, as they have never tried doing anything like this before, and were true beginners. So after some instruction on the lake system I helped Jeff & Kathryn get set up with some fishing equipment, locations, & presentations to use while fishing. They had a wonderful time just being out on the lake and enjoying the pristine atmosphere newly discovering all there is to see. They caught only 1 fish but had a fabulous day on the water. Second day they tripled their catch landing three. For beginners the progress was going forward in the right direction. 3rd day they caught a dozen great size Smallmouth from 12-16-inches. They not only fished but also found a natural beach area and went swimming for an hour or so to enjoy the beautiful water temperatures. 4th and final day had them catching even more than day three, and the fish were all BIG with Kathryn landing a “HUGE” 19-inch Master Anglers Award Smallmouth Bass. Way to go Kathryn, going from complete novice fisher to a Master Angler Fisher in 3 days. They also spent part of there last day enjoying lunch and swimming at Twin Falls. Both had a fabulous stay and were talking of their possible return for next year. Thanks for choosing us for your first fishing adventure.

Bill Kassow, son Kamen and Dad / Grandpa Bill SR with John Sheltar & son Jake and Kane Comfort all from Salina, KS & were back for their 6th stay with us at Fireside Lodge. First day they went to a few creek accessible lakes & caught a lot of Northern Pike in each boat. Jack caught his first ever Northern Pike and was amazed at the creek ride. Great day on the water for all. 2nd day was mostly about Smallmouth fishing catching their fair share up to 17”, and Bill caught a nice 32” Musky. On their 3rd & final day, WOW, time flies by when you having fun, they split their time up between portaging to Terry Lake and fishing Little Vermilion Lake. They did well catching Northern Pike on Terry Lake and Smallmouth Bass on Little Vermilion. This was a FABULOUS trip for this family, and a milestone for Jack as everything he did was a first. This was his 1st trip to Canada and it was great to see him enjoy everything for the first time. Thanks for choosing us at Fireside Lodge for your family fishing vacation.

Common Northern Pike fishing at Fireside Lodge Canada

Father & son Bob & Ron Ramsey from Leavenworth, KS & Sewanee, TN returned for their 8th consecutive year. First day on the water was spent chasing Muskie down on Closs Lake having some success locating a few nice fish, but having no takers. Ron & Bob spent all their time hunting down the toothy critters concentrating on the BIG DOGS.
Second day they caught some great Pike Ron having the biggest of the day measuring 35”. Third day was spent having fun catching Northern Pike landing some nice size fish in the 28-32” range. 4th day had them chasing Musky again. They planned this on a day when storms would be in the area with the hopes of increased Musky activity, but the storms also had lighting which drove them off the lake, but not before landing one and getting a number of follows. 5th & final day was spent enjoying the wilderness together, catching some substantial size Pike and planning for next years strategy. Both had another wonderful father & son fishing trip making many more memories together, and before departing made reservations for their traditional fishing trip with us in 2013.
Father & Son Fishing in Canada for Northern Pike

James McCollam with sons James & Ryan from Orland Hills, IL returned to Fireside Lodge for their 4th time with father & son Bob & Sean Potempa from Tinley Park, IL. First day on the water was all about Muskie as they fished Cedarbough & Little Vermilion Lake. No actual catches, but follows were had and Sean had his first ever encounter with a Musky fighting a near 40”er for about 10 minutes. The fish ended up winning this battle after getting Sean’s line & lure tangled in the pencil reeds. One battle lost by Sean, but the war with Musky just began. Second day was spent Northern Pike fishing doing very well catching 35-40 as a group. WOW!!! What a fabulous day. On their last two days most effort was directed towards fishing for larger Muskie & Northern Pike. They did catch some bigger Pike and a few Muskie 26-30”. The bigger fish showed up but evaded them. Jim, at one point during supper showed his frustration with seeing all these BIG fish & not being able to get them to commit, but even as he was finishing his sentence a smile came across his face showing satisfaction just that he saw these magnificent fish. All had a terrific fathers and sons fishing vacation making many wonderful memories together. Thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge to do so.
