Fireside Lodge Fishing Report 8/1 to 8/8 2015

Trophy Muskie Fishing By Jennie Heinl at Fireside Lodge

Weather this week was cold & rainy but our guests persevered through it & caught plenty of fish.

Mike & Jennie Heinl from Pittsburgh, PA returned for their 3^{rd

39" Muskie 4 Musky day Fishing by Jennie} consecutive year. DOA they went out & caught 16 Northern Pike by suppertime. 1^st full day they did great catching 37 Pike & each landed a 19” Trophy Smallmouth Bass. 2^nd day they caught 18 Northern Pike a few SB. 3^rd day had Mike having the hot hand landing 15 Pike himself including a 34.5”er. 4^th day was a dynamite Northern Pike day as they landed over 38 between 30-38” &

Jennie lost a brand new X-Rap after hooking into a monster fish that spooled a full reel of braided line. 5^th day was another good Pike fishing day catching 17 Northern Pike in the 28 to 32 inch class. 6^th day they had a fabulous day Muskie fishing Mike catching 1 with Jennie being hot catching 4 including a 39” & 41” Muskie. 7^th day was another BIG

Northern Pike & tried to soak up every minute before heading back to their busy lives in the city. They were sad to leave but very happy for the wonderful memories they made together in our fabulous wilderness setting.

3^rd year return guest David Lilja from Woodbury, MN was back with Donald Heywood from Mound, MN for his 1^st visit. By the end of the first day these two caught plenty of Pike & David also caught an 18” trophy Smallmouth Bass & a 36” Muskie. 2^nd day they did it again catching over 30 Northern Pike. 3^rd day was a day of catching both Smallmouth Bass & Pike saying that they caught their fair share. 4^th & final day was another numbers day on Northern Pike catching well over 30 & Ed said they were all bigger Pike. Both had a great stay & departed telling other guests they would see them next year.

Smallmouth Bass with JoAnn cashing in on the BIG fish of the day landing a HUGE 19” Trophy Smallmouth. 4^th day was a fabulous day Smallmouth Bass fishing as they caught 28 before supper several 17-17.5” an 18 & 18.5” & 19” plus two 30”+ Pike. 5^th day was another fun Smallmouth day despite the wind & JoAnn caught another 18” Trophy. All left with Master Anglers Patches in hand having had a wonderful stay with us at Fireside Lodge.

Jill with Her Trophy Smallmouth Bass Fishing at Fireside Lodge} consecutive year with his wife Jill. 1^st day they met post cold front conditions with cold rain a wind which made the Smallmouth fishing difficult catching only a few. 2^nd day was great for Bill as he caught a 30” Tiger Musky, 6 Pike up to 35”, & 12 good size

Smallmouth Bass including an 18” trophy. 3rd day was a “GREAT” Smallmouth Bass catching day landing over 25 with 75% being over 16” & Jill caught 3 Trophies 18-18.5” with Bill catching 4 Trophy Bass between 18-19.5”. 4^th day was windy & cool driving Jill in at noon after catching some Smallmouth Bass. Then, while Bill was fishing alone he hooked into a nice 35” Muskie and had a interesting time landing it himself, taking the only picture possible, in the net. 5^th & final day was a cool rainy day, Bill fishing most of it alone, catching another 18” Smallmouth Bass and a 34” Northern Pike were his highlights of the day. Both left with Big smiles on their faces having a wonderful stay & already discussing & planning for 2016.

picture but a long lasting memory. 3^rd day was their best day ever catching 36 Northern Pike & 10 Smallies. 4^th was a quality day, catching several Smallmouth Bass 16 to 17.5” & Carol caught a Trophy 18”er & also her 1^st ever Musky at 31”. 5^th day Bob braved it alone on a windy, rainy, cold day catching few fish. 6^th & final day weather improved & Carol & Bob made a day of it having a 1^st time adventure of breaking up a Beaver Dam. You could feel their excitement as they described their experience. They also caught 23 Northern Pike & Bob landed a trophy 18” Smallmouth Bass. Both said they had a wonderful time & talked about bringing Bob’s younger brother next time.

Mike Stevens from Lake Barrington, IL returned for his 3^rd visit with his group of Jack Schneider, James Barrington, Paul Douglas from Huntley, Wheeling, & Hoffman Estates, IL with Bob Lauffer & Johnny Sills from Clermont & Orlando, FL. 1^st day Mike caught a nice Tiger Muskie & with Jim caught over 20 Smallmouth Bass & 2-30”+ Pike. Bob & Johnny also caught a lot of Smallmouth Bass & a few Pike. 2^nd day all didgreat

catching some big pike over 30” lots of Smallmouth including three trophies, Jack catching an 18.5” while Bob caught two 1 at 19” and the other hitting the 20” mark.

3^rd day was their best day ever with Bob & Johnnie alone catching

over 60 fish mostly Pike, with Bob landing another Trophy Smallmouth as did Mike. As a group they caught over 160 Northern Pike. 4^th & final day Bob & Mike caught over 70 Northern Pike while Jack & Johnny were right there with them catching slightly less, and Mike came up with a Trophy 18” Smallmouth Bass. Jim & Paul did well on Smallmouth Bass with Jim also landing an 18” Trophy. All left saying they had a GREAT trip & are looking forward to their return.

themselves definite contenders for our 2016 brochure. The next two days they killed the Smallmouth Bass on Top-water Poppers catching Trophy Smallmouth, Ryne landing 3, Braden 4 & dad caught 2 ranging from 18 to 19.5”. That’s great Smallmouth Bass fishing. 5^th & final day the

trifecta was in play as Braden would need a Trophy 40”+ Pike to accomplish what no other Fireside Lodge guest has done, catching a Master Anglers Award Trophy fish for Northern Pike, Muskie, & Smallmouth Bass in a single trip. Well it was not meant to be however they all went home catching trophy Smallmouth Bass along with many others in the 17-17.5” range and Brad finished the trip with a nice 36” Muskie having made a lifetime of memories with his boys.

1st ever Pike by Virginia Fishing at Fireside Lodge

Long time return guests Tom & Jen Born from Lakeville, MN were back with Jen’s sister & her husband Virginia & Brian Davis from Marion, IL for their 1^st visit. 1st day had both Brian & Virginia catching their 1^st pike plus many more as a group caught somewhere around 40 Pike. Second day Brian caught his 1^st Smallmouth Bass ever plus his 1^st ever Muskie, and a nice one at that measuring a healthy 36”.

Tom ended up with the fish of the day landing a monster 20” Trophy Smallmouth Bass. 3^rd & final day of their short stay was a great day catching fish, spending some time at Twin Falls & enjoying the wonderful wilderness atmosphere one more time before heading home.

Fireside Lodge Fishing Report 7/21 to 8/1 2015

Trophy Muskie Fishing at Fireside Lodge by Pete

Weather was the story this week as we had a series of heavy showers, windy conditions, & T-Storms which affected time on the water. All managed the storms & had good fishing.

Big Northern Pike Fishing By Joe at Fireside Lodge

Tim & son Joe Bergen, with Tim Komenda & Gerry Curran from Orland Park, & Hickory Hills, Il were back being consecutive year guests since 2002. 1^st day was great having many Muskie follows, catching a lot of Northern Pike & Tim K caught an 18” Trophy Smallmouth while Joe landed a BIG 38.5” Northern Pike. 2^nd day was more difficult because of the wind but all still caught fish. 3^rd day was a great day fishing combining for over 20 bigger size Northern Pike & Tim K came up with another Big 17” Smallmouth Bass. Last day was similar to the 3^rd searching for Muskie for half the day then switching & catching a bunch of Northern Pike. All left having had a fabulous stay already talking about next years group being bigger.

his secret lure “The Ghost”. 3^rd day was a good day for Danny & Kyle catching plenty of Pike and Smallmouth Bass discovering the West End of the lake. 4^th day was off to a portage lake for Walleye and they had a great day catching 13 Walleye 22-26” while landing countless Pike searching for the Walleye. 5^th day they did another portage lake for Muskie & Steve had a fabulous day hooking up on 4 Muskie and landing 3. All left having had a fabulous time.

Trophy Smallmouth Bass measuring 18”. 2^nd day all had a lot of fun but Pete stole the show by landing a HUGE beautiful 43” Muskie his way with his favorite bait, a Top Raider. After supper John also caught a BIG Musky landing a fat 38.5” fish. 3^rd day while searching for Muskie again & having follows & catching some Pike their were two firsts. Tim caught his 1^st Muskie, a big 36”er and Matt caught his biggest fish, a nice 34” Northern Pike. 4^th & final day was a good day for Tim catching four big Smallmouth Bass up to 17.5”. All left with many father & son memories.

Returning for their 4^th consecutive year were Jerry & Susie Florea from Martinsville, OH. DOA a few hours before suppertime they caught 5 Pike. 1^st day despite the wind they caught some nice 28-30” Northern Pike. 2^nd day was windy & Jerry did well catching Pike while Susie took a day off fishing staying back & enjoying the wonderful wilderness atmosphere we have at Fireside Lodge. 3^rd day they portaged to Closs Lake getting many follows but could not get one to hit. Jerry said they saw 4 different fish over 40” & one that went 48-50”. 4^th day was adventure day fishing up in Hooch Lake catching many Northern Pike. They both almost lost their fishing rod when a fish hit a lure that was dangling over the boat just ticking the waters edge. 5^th day had them catching some nice Northern Pike before the severe rain & T-Storms hit chasing them in for cover. Both had a wonderful visit & made reservations for the same dates in 2016.

Back for his 3^rd consecutive year was Paul Miller from Kearney, NE

with friend Jim McKnight. DOA before supper they caught 6 Pike with Paul catching a 36”er. 1^st full day was fantastic as they caught over 75 Northern Pike & Jim caught a trophy 18.5” Smallmouth Bass. 2^ndday was slower as they could only fish select spots because of the high winds. 3^rd they caught a few Pike while fishing for Muskie getting some follows & then they switched tactics to trolling & did better catching Pike. 4^th day was very active catching 68 Northern Pike. 5^th & final half day was great catching over 30 Northern Pike in just 3.5 hours. Both left having had a fabulous time.

Returning for their 12^th consecutive year were Kent Williams & Bill Black from Atlanta, GA. DOA before supper they caught 10 Pike Bill having the hot hand. 1^st day they did well catching 15 Pike & their second day was even better catching over 20 with a few Smallmouth mixed in. 3^rd day was an amazing Northern Pike fishing & catching day. Their fishing was best described as quoted from Bill “we could have caught as many Pike as we wanted to but we finally just quit fishing for them”. 4^th & final day had them catching a mix of Smallmouth Bass & Northern Pike in the morning with Kent landing a big 37.5” Pike but their afternoon was literally a wash out as we had very heavy rains with some T-storms. Before departing we had some discussion about dates for 2016.

his son Sean all from Indianapolis, IN. 1^st & 2^nd days they caught some nice Northern Pike with day 2 being excellent catching over 30 Pike before supper. 3^rd day was another good Northern Pike day catching many with Kevin having the hot hand using an old standby lure, a Johnson Silver Minnow. 4^th day was good Northern Pike fishing with Kevin doing the best again with the same spoon. 5^th & final day was a planned half-day fishing doing very well on both Smallmouth bass & Pike. Because of their plan they were the only boat that did not get caught in the T-Storms with heavy rain. All had a terrific stay with us and hope to return.

DOA all caught fish before supper. 1^st day was unreal for never fishing on the lake system before as a group catching well over 150 Northern Pike. Joe & Mike had a fabulous 2^{nd

Joe Fly-Fishing Trophy Smallmouth Bass at Fireside Lodge} day each catching BIG Smallmouth Bass, Michael’s at 17” & Joe caught a Trophy 18”er while landing over 20 Pike, Joe catching most of his & his Trophy Smallmouth Bass while fly fishing. The rest of the group did well being almost a repeat of day 1 & Chris F thought he

Biggest Smallmouth Bass Fishing at Fireside Lodge with Dad by Michael

caught a Trophy Smallmouth bass but did not measure his fish. Chris Buckman & sons Ben & Nolan caught 20, which made 50 for 2 days, & this is the first time any of them have ever fished period. Day 3 Chis, Ben, & Nolan caught 8 Smallmouth Bass several Pike with Chris B landing a big 34”er. Chris & Michael had a fabulous day catching Smallmouth bass with Michael catching 37 himself. That evening Chris B toped his 34” Pike catching the fish of the day by landing a BIG 36” Muskie. Their 4^th & final day was fun but cut very short by the severe weather in the form of heavy rain & T-Storm. After getting soaked to the bone all decided t call it a day & prepare for their trip back home. All had a great time making wonderful father & son memories & hope to return in the near future.
