Fireside Lodge Fishing Report 8/22 to 9/2 2015

 

First Trophy Muskie for Steve Stewart Fishing at Fireside Lodge

This week started with the most severe cold front of the summer lasting 3 days having lots of rain, high wind and dropping temps down to a high of 47.8F on 8/23 & a low on 8/24 of 37F.

Halltown, MO were very happy to be back. 1^st day they did well catching Smallmouth Bass some being quality fish 16 to 19”. 2^nd day they caught plenty of Pike & Smallmouth but no picture fish. 3^rd & 4^th days were severe cold front conditions with all day rain, high winds with the high being only 47.8 degrees. Steve tried it for a while by himself in the afternoon surprising himself catching

Many Trophy Smallmouth Bass Fishing at Fireside Lodge

Pike & hooked a Muskie that came clear out of the water spitting his hook out at the same time. Next few days Steve tried fishing further from shore in about 15ft of water & that seemed to work as they caught some big Smallmouth Bass with Linda catching what Steve calls a Toad, a Trophy 18.5” Smallmouth Bass with huge girth. 7^th day was good with

Terrific Fishing for Trophy Smallmouth Bass at Fireside Lodge

Debra again catching an 18.5” Master Anglers Trophy Smallmouth Bass while Steve caught more numbers, most being 15-17”. 8^th day they did really well catching lots of Smallmouth with 10-12 being 15-17” & Debra caught another Trophy 18.5” Smallie making that a total of 8 Trophy Bass between 18-19”. 9^th day was a great day catching many Smallmouth Bass including 2 more Trophy fish over 18” increasing their trophy total to 10 & just missing on 2 more measuring 17.75”.

10^th & final day they finished strong catching lots of Smallmouth, all over 15” many 16.5-17.5” & yes they caught their 11^th trophy with Steve landing the biggest of the trip a HUGE 20” Smallmouth. He also caught a 36” Northern Pike. This concluded their trip both having had wonderful time making many memories.

returned for their 2^nd trip this year coming back with Jon Beard Virginia Beach, VA, John Hook Jonesborough, TN returning for their 2^nd & 4^th time plus guests Duke Osborne & Bryan Gast Coeburn, VA. DOA Jerry & Brian

caught some nice Northern Pike including 2 at 38”. 1^st day Brian got a nice Muskie, his 1^st ever, John caught an 18.5 football of a Smallmouth & Jon also had a big Trophy Smallie. 2^nd day all caught fish with Larry & Jon alone landing about 25 Pike.

3^rd day brought our most severe cold front of the summer making

these avid anglers stay in, but all had a fun & plenty of laughs telling past fish stories. 4^th day this group was ready to fish, having an active day with Larry & Jon doing the best catching 40-50 Pike. 5^th day despite being slower than they are accustomed to all caught fish & Jerry landed a Trophy Smallmouth Bass. 6^th & final day they went out big catching so many Northern Pike they lost count. Jerry lost the BIGGEST Muskie he very saw in the 30 trips with us, the fish straightening out the snap on his leader and Duke caught a nice Tiger Musky. Before leaving Larry said he would be in touch soon to reserve dates for 2016.

BIG 37.5" Northern Pike by Brian Fishing at Fireside Lodge

Ed & Brian Ulch, Sal & Kim Leone, plus father daughter Brian & Sylvia Havlicek all from Solon, IA were visiting us for their 1^st time for a family fishing adventure. DOA they caught some fish & Sylvia set the bar catching the largest Pike. 1^st full day all caught fish, mostly Northern Pike, and Brian caught a big 17.5” Smallmouth Bass.

2^nd day they had to face a severe cold front, which started on day 1, with rain & very windy conditions. This is tough conditions for the most experienced on our lake system however the did great fairing the weather all day, being the last boats in for supper and caught some nice fish with Brian having the hot hand at the end catching 10 Northern Pike just before supper. He said the action was fast catching 4 Pike in 4 casts. 3^rd & final day that front hung around until about noon then finally cleared & got nice.

They caught fish throughout the day & had a shore lunch at Twin Falls. During lunch, Sylvia while fishing below the falls got hung up on what she thought was a log. While attempting to free her lure from what she thought was a log, all of a sudden it took off taking line very fast before the lure popped free. Obviously Sylvia had hooked a BIG fish that felt like a log. Sal also caught his biggest Northern Pike a nice 35”er. All had a fabulous day and a terrific family trip making memories to last a lifetime.

cold front with high wind & lots of rain. All faired well catching fish, with Jimmy & Steve doing very well catching many Pike and a few nice Smalllmouth Bass. 2^nd day between George, Bill, Rick, & Justine they caught over 70 Northern Pike. 3^rd day fishing was good with Justin catching his 2^nd & 3^rd Muskie of his life, landing his first the day before, Steve caught 2 Trophy Smallmouth Bass & Jimmy also landed a Trophy

Smallmouth Bass after supper. 4^th day Justin had the hot hand catching many Smallmouth Bass & Northern Pike on a white spinner bait. George & Bill while fishing a portage lake for Muskie caught 4 plus spotted a Moose & were able to get within 15 yards of this magnificent animal watching & videoing it feeding in the water. George said it was huge & by far the biggest Moose he had ever seen.

Super Trophy Smallmouth Bass Fishing at Fireside Lodge

Rick & Justine caught a lot of Pike & Smallies. Jimmy & Steve spent 12 hours fishing for Muskie & it paid off catching 8 including 2 over 40” Steve landing both a Barred & Tiger Muskie plus Jimmy landed a nice 33”er. That’s a FBAULOUS day Muskie fishing in anyone’s book. Because of flights Jimmy, Steve, & Justin stayed one more day a it paid off having a terrific finish catching 45-50 Northern Pike & having a lot of action on the surface. All left having & fabulous time & saying they will be back.

Trophy Smallmouth Bass Fishing is Best at Fireside Lodge

Here for their 1^st visit were Greg Mruk & Mike Catuscelli from Park Ridge & Prospect Heights, IL. 1^st day was spent learning the new waters & Greg caught the fish of the day a mid-30” Pike. Also they were happy to see their friends Wade, Dave, & Kurt mentioned below who arrived. 2^nd day they did great catching many Northern Pike, Greg with 10 & Mike about the same & landed some Smallmouth Bass. 3^rd day did about the same day 2 but today the ticket was a throw back lure the old stand by Red Eye Spoon. Greg even caught a few Smallmouth Bass with this spoon. 4^th & final day they finished catching some nice Pike.

Koziol from Mount Prospect, Libertyville, & Prospect Heights, IL. DOA these three went out & caught a half dozen Pike in a few hours before supper. 1^st day was great as they hooked up with over 30 fish landing 27 Northern Pike. 2^nd day was even better catching 29 bigger Northern Pike, 90% between 28 to 33”, & David came up with a HUGE 38” very heavy Pike. 3^rd & final day even was better catching 32 Northern Pike with 10 being over 30” including 2-34”, 2-36” and another 38” Monster that looked over 40” having a huge girth. All left having a fabulous time looking forward to their return.

Harlan Johnson & John Utley from Park Rapids & Vadnais Heights, MN were fishing with us for their 1^st time. 1^st day they had a wonderful day getting the feel of our lake system and by day 2, using the old stand by red & white Dardevle, caught a bunch of Northern Pike. Both John & Harlan are long time friends growing up together in a fishing community in Bemiji, MN and just love being on the water as a way of catching up with each others daily lives & reminiscing about their early days. 3^rd & final day they enjoyed catching some nice Northern Pike with Harlan having the hot hand, John saying he was the expert net man. Both left having an enjoyable stay loving every minute of their time.

Terrific Fishing For BIG Muskie at Fireside Lodge by Matt Holesinger

This week started out with our hottest day of the year & everyone wishing for a cool down. What’s the old saying “Watch What You Ask For”. Well they got it as we had two cold fronts bringing heavy cold rain. The fishing usually does not fair well in those conditions but our guests toughed it out catching some nice fish.

Father / Son Brian & William Reames from Nashville, TN returned for their 3^rd trip with Brian’s good friend David Murphy & son Thomas from Richmond, VA for their 1^st visit.

1^st day was a very good day as this group caught Smallmouth Bass and a few Northern Pike with both Brian & Thomas coming up big, each landing a Trophy Smallmouth Bass. 2^nd day they faced a severe cold front with strong winds but did better than expected catching Smallmouth Bass & Pike. Just Brian & William alone landed 21 Smallies & 3 Northern Pike.

3^rd & final day was FANTASTIC catching 66 fish, most Northern Pike, along with several Smallmouth Bass. All left have a great time making many father & son memories.

Life long friends Larry Hinshaw & Pat Hobson from Blue Grass, IA & Elwood, IN returned for their 8^th year. 1^st day they caught plenty of Smallmouth Bass with a mix of sizes including several 17.5”ers and Pat caught a HUGE 19.5” Trophy.

2^nd day was spent battling high winds with cold front conditions. They managed to catch a dozen Samllmouth but it was with a lot of Rock’n & Roll’n. 3^rd day they thought of using the drop shot technique to gain more line control on a 2nd windy day & it worked well for them catching about 20 Smallmouth Bass. 4^th day was super as they caught a lot of BIG Smallmouth Bass & lost count after 30. Larry caught 1 Trophy Smallmouth at 18.5” but Pat landed 5 Trophy Smallmouth a 20”, 2 at 19.5” & 2 measuring 18.5”.

5^th day they faced a severe cold front, high winds, & heavy rain, which brought these two avid anglers in by noon waving the white flag. 6^th day despite the cold front conditions they managed 21 Smallmouth Bass & a few Pike. 7^th day was tougher getting the bass to bite catching 10. Last day Pat did great & according to Larry after he showed Pat how it was done. Both enjoyed their trip making more fishing memories together.

Holesinger from Fulton & Roscoe, IL DOA Smallmouth were the main objective and while catching some Matt was surprise when a large 37” Muskie ate his sinking worm. The fight was on & Matt succeeded in landing this beast with a light rod, & 8lb test. 1^st day was a tough cold front day with heavy winds doing well catching Smallmouth Bass & a few Pike despite the conditions. 2^nd day they caught 21, with a lot being Big, Audrey

caught an 18.5” Trophy & Matt had 2 measuring 18.5 & 19.5”. 3^rd day was absolutely super as they caught 63 fish, 49 Pike & 14 Smallmouth Bass with Don landing 2 Trophy size at 18 & 19”, but Audrey had the catch of the day with her 19.5” Trophy Smallmouth Bass. 4^th & final day they were met with a severe cold front, high winds with heavy rain. Most were in by noon, but these 3 fished until 3PM catching 21 Smallmouth Bass & 2 Pike. All departed having great family vacation making many wonderful memories.

bringing son Dan & Crystal Mullins from Rock Mount, VA for their 1^st visit. 1^st day they were greeted with windy cold front conditions but with experience on their side John & Monica were able to find fishable spots to catch some nice size Northern Pike. In fact Dan & Crystal caught there first ever Pike with Crystal’s 2^nd Pike being a big 35”er. 2^nd day John said he

experienced the best single day Smallmouth Bass fishing ever loosing count after 50 all being big with countless 17-17.5”ers, John, Dan, & Crystal all caught an 18”, but Crystal had the fish of the day with a GIANT 20” Smallmouth Bass. 3^rd day was very good catching 27 Smallmouth Bass and 3 Northern Pike. 4^th day it turned cold, with heavy rain & high winds again but they still managed to catch fish & Dan came up with a HUGE 19” Smallmouth Bass on a 3/4oz spoon of all things. 5^th day fishing

continued to be affected by the cold front however they caught some

First Trophy Smallmouth Bass Fishing by Dan

SB & Pike & Dan caught another Trophy 18” SB. 6^th day was great as they got right into the Smallmouth Bass again catching 16-17.5” fish, Monica landed a Trophy 18”, & Crystal caught a big 36” Northern Pike. This was Crystal & Brian’s last day & left having a great 1^st experience. 7^th & 8^th days John & Monica missed having Dan & Crystal in the boat with them as the continued having good fishing catching Smallmouth up to 17.5”. The left with some tears of happiness for the wonderful memories made, & tears of sadness that it was over.

was back again this year with his Grandson Keeghan (13) for their 7^th trip together. DOA before supper they caught 8 Northern Pike & Walt picked up where he left off on his June trip catching his 3^rd Trophy Northern Pike this year at Fireside Lodge measuring 42”. 1^st day was a good day fishing catching both Northern Pike & Smallmouth Bass & Keeghan landed a beauty 18.5” Master Anglers Award Trophy. 2^nd day found them back at the dock before noon as a severe cold front (high of 54) heavy rain with high winds made it very difficult to fish so both had a long nap before supper.

3^rd day they caught numbers of Pike during the day & in the evening caught some bigger fish with Keeghan having a big 34” Northern Pike hit his popping frog ending the trip on a high note. Both made great memories & before departing Walt reserved their dates for 2016.

Cousins Frank & Doug Kerr from Plainfield, IN & Henrico, NC returned for their 5^th consecutive year. 1^st day was a terrific start to their trip catching 56 Smallmouth Bass including several trophies over 18”. 2^nd day was a cold wash out having heavy rain, cold temps & high winds. 3^rd day was slow because of the sever cold

front but they managed to catch 9 SB and a few Pike. 4^th day they caught fish but the bass still seemed off from the front. 5^th day things started to recover & they finished strong catching 25 nice size Smallmouth including Doug landing a Master Anglers Award Trophy Smallmouth Bass measuring 19”. Before departure they were already discussing possible dates for 2016.

Here for their first visit was Dave & Doug Byrum, Muncie, IN. & Brighton, MI with Dan Phelps Somerset, KY . DOA & 1^st full day they were met with tough cold front conditions with heavy rain & high winds & for 1^st timers did well catching a mix of Smallmouth Bass & Northern Pike, plus had a ball having conversation & laughs. 2^nd day they had a great day catching Pike & Smallmouth Bass with a good number of them being over 16”. 3^rd & final day they had a great day catching many Northern Pike and Smallmouth Bass ending on a strong note. Dave said they all had a thoroughly enjoyable trip fishing & enjoying each other’s company, plus the bonus of meeting other guests during their stay.
