This was a beautiful week as the temperatures were around 70F for daytime highs as about 50F for lows everyday only having rain once in the form of a heavy thunderstorm. Except for the T-Storm’s you can’t ask for much better weather.

Guests since 1995, Father & Son Alan & Jon Wohlman were back to apply there fishing skills. For seven days these two re-unite to spend many hours in the boat together having great conversation reminiscing about the past, analyzing the future, while fishing in our great wilderness setting. They had a “FABULOUS” trip catching many Smallmouth Bass, their primary target, Northern Pike and ran into a few Muskie. They landed numerous Smallmouth Bass in the 14-17.5” range, & several 18-19”. They caught a lot of Northern Pike up to 38” with the majority being between 28 to 35-inches. They also caught several Muskie with Alan taking top billing in this category landing a beautiful 40” Tiger Musky, and a 46” Master Anglers Award Trophy Muskie. WOW!! What great catches while Bass fishing. They had a fantastic trip and before leaving made their reservations to return in 2014.

First timers fishing at Fireside Lodge were father, son, & Grandson/son Bill, Eric, & Nathan Thielking from Lake Pleasant, NY, and Ostamder, OH. Here for a short three days they did great for their 1^st time fishing Little Vermilion Lake, catching many Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike and both Nathan & Eric caught a big Lake Trout. Boy they catch on quick. Next two days they caught many more Smallmouth Bass and Northern Pike while enjoying our wonderful wilderness, visiting Twin Falls and viewing wildlife while making wonderful memories together. Thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge to make family memories among three generations.

Master Anglers Trophy Smallmouth Bass in Canada

Long time guests of Fireside Lodge Father & Son Larry & LJ Psyk from   Jim Nelson, Jim IL, & Bobby from Oak Brook, IL were back to enjoy their traditional Canadian Fishing trip which originated back in the 1960’s. First day out Bobby landed the first fish & it was a dandy 17.5” Smallmouth Bass.  Bobby also caught an 18” Trophy, Ken & Larry both caught trophy Smallmouth over 18”, and Larry & LJ caught the most including a 37.5” Northern Pike & a 37” Muskie. During their next four days they caught plenty of fish even though the water was colder than normal. Larry seemed to have the Big Smallmouth number as he   The final day Ken finished the trip right landing another Huge Trophy Smallmouth Bass at 19” and a BIG Muskie measuring 39”. All left having a fabulous time and hope to return in 2014.

caught 2 more Monster Smallmouth Trophies measuring 20.25” & 20.75”, and LJ also caught one at 18.5”. They also caught some big Lake Trout, which never happened before. The water being so cold from the late ice out kept the Lakers up shallow in the same locations as Smallmouth and Pike.

Trophy 40-inch Northern Pike Fishing in Canada Lakes

First time fishing at Fireside Lodge were father & son Erik & David Staub from Greeley & Denver, CO. These two never fished from a motorboat despite them having a lot of experience ^th cast he hooked into a Big Muskie landing a 44” Master Anglers Award Trophy.  WOW, that’s efficiency catching a Musky in 20 casts on a fly rod. For all who fly fish this is a remarkable fishing feat. The fly was a red & white Clouser. These two also caught a good number of big Smallmouth with David catching an 18.25” Trophy. Both went home making terrific father & son memories, which was the biggest catch of all.

fishing from a canoe & streams. The first few days they had some concerns about the boat & motor, but by the end of their 6 days David felt very comfortable with boat handling. These two also had fantastic fishing catching many Smallmouth Bass & Northern Pike throughout their stay. Both Erik & David landed several 37 to 38” Pike each, David catching a Master Anglers Award Trophy Northern Pike measuring 40” along with many in the 30 to 36” class. Erik caught a lot fly-fishing, and David most of his using a spinning rod. However, on their last day after not fly-fishing all week, David decided to fly fish. They were into a bunch of Pike at the time & on around his 20

Fly fisher Art Girad from Chesterfield, VA returned with friends & co-members of his fly-fishing club. Larry Barron & Robert Thomas from Richmond, VA, & Dick Chapman from Midlothian, VA. 

All are strictly fly-fishers and were here to test their ^st 2 days they each caught 8-10 fish   Art also had a 50” plus Muskie follow his fly and hang around the boat for a while. Both Art & Robert said it was the biggest fresh water fish they ever saw. The last day was remarkable fishing as Robert and Dick had a banner day. They caught well over   They stated that if they caught every fish they hooked up on

including big Smallies. Robert, Art & Larry each caught an 18” Trophy and Dick caught a big 37” Pike. Robert also caught a BIG fish landing a HUGE 40” Muskie on a red & white Barr Bouface Fly. GREAT catch in any fly-fishers record book. Another day both boats caught over 30 fish each, a combo of Northern Pike & Smallmouth Bass and both Larry & Art caught another Trophy at 18.5” and Robert landed three, 1 at 19” and 2 at 18”.

they would have landed over 100 Smallmouth Bass. They were very impressed as this will go down as their best day Fly-Fishing for Smallmouth Bass ever. All left having a GREAT trip & hope to return with more members of

Opening was a bit more of a challenge this year. Winter and lake ice seemed to hang on forever as we found ourselves trying to save our docks two days before opening day instead of preparing for guests arriving. Four of us spent 10 hours defecting ice from the front of our docks, creating an ice jam against shore so the ice would not crush our docks. When all was said and done we saved them and got the details done to open and prepare for our first Fireside lodge guests of 2013.

Close but we made it with about 5 minutes to spare!!!!!!!

First guest of our 2013 fishing season was again Frank Hazzard from Arlington, TX. This is Frank’s 23^rd consecutive year at Fireside Lodge and it shows in his lake knowledge and ability to find fish in just about any condition. He is also very kind to share his knowledge with others, ^rd place. Frank has a passionate feeling for Canada’s North, which shows through every minute he is here, and especially when he departs. We hope to see Frank in 2014 for his 24^th consecutive year.

and even takes some other guests with him to help them catch fish and learn the lake. Some examples of daily catches in his boat are, 3 people 152 Smallmouth Bass most between 15 to 17.5” & 1 Lake Trout, 2 people 93 Smallmouth Bass, 6 Lake Trout, 1 Whitefish, 2 people 83 Smallmouth Bass, 1 Muskie 38”, 1 Northern Pike 38.5”, & 3 Whitefish. Along with all the great fishing Frank had another wonderful Canadian Wilderness experience, enjoying the wildlife and natural surroundings, good conversation with other guests, and playing up-words with Beverly & Steve (Audrey’s Parents) every evening coming in his usual 3

Fishing buddies Bryan Neel III and Tim Stewart from Rochester, MN returned for their 11^th consecutive year and 16^th visit with us at Fireside Lodge. These two prefer to catch long fish spending most of their time trolling or casting for

Northern Pike. They did very well catching many Pike in the 28 to 36-inch range and both caught 38-39 inchers. They also had some incidental catches of Lake Trout and both landed several monsters measuring 32-34inches. With the ice just leaving the lake and the water being so cold the Lake Trout are in the shallows spread out throughout the whole lake, so when fishing for Northern Pike you will catch Lakers without trying. They also caught their fair share of Smallmouth Bass each landing 2 Master Anglers award Smallmouth measuring between 18-19 inches with Bryan landing the 19-inch Monster. Both had such a fabulous time that before leaving they were talking about returning for our final week of fishing. Hope to see then again this year.

Father & Son Greg & Don Foley from Pasadena & Crownsville, MD were fishing at Fireside Lodge for their 3^rd consecutive year. First day on the water these two teamed up wit Frank Hazzard to catch 152 Smallmouth Bass between 15 to 17.5-inches. The next two days Greg & Don caught

Lake Trout Fishing in Canada at Lodges

30+ Northern Pike and 20+ Pike having many other Pike either get off or strike short. They landed a lot of Northern Pike 32 to 36-inches with a few between 37-38-inches, and Greg caught a 42-inch Master Anglers Award Trophy. Forth day had them landing 20 Pike, most over 30”, 12 Smallmouth Bass 16-17” & a 19” Whitefish. Last day they fished with Frank (BIG TEX) Hazzard catching 103 Smallmouth Bass 16-17.5” with Don landing two trophy Smallmouth at 18 & 18.75-inches, 6 Lake Trout and 1 Whitefish. Two of the Lakers were GIANT at 33 and 34-iches. All had a “FABULOUS” day and Don & Greg had a terrific finish to their fishing trip. Their final words were “We Will See You Next Year”.

Father & Son August/Augi & Wayne 

Agostini from Northvale, NJ & Mooresville, NC returned for their second trip with us at Fireside Lodge and joining them was Augi’s close friend Tom Rubino from Hasbrouck Hgts, NJ. These three had a “Great” Northern Pike fishing trip. In four days they caught 102 Northern Pike with most measuring over 30”, and all caught 34-36 inch Northern Pike. Augi and Wayne both landed big 37-inch Pike, and Augi caught a Master Anglers Award Trophy measuring 40-inches. When Augi arrived he said he was going to catch a Trophy Northern Pike and he did not waste any time catching it on the first day fishing. All had a fabulous time and plan on returning

Terrific Musky Fishing at Fireside Lodge Canada

Mike Uebelherr from Stow, OH was back for his 11^th fishing trip at Fireside Lodge in 8-years. He did very well catching many Northern Pike throughout his 5-day stay with us. Most were in the 28 to 36-inch range plus he accidentally hooked into a huge 40” Muskie. He said it was in just several feet of water near an over hanging tree. He saw the swirl before the fish hit, and then the fight was on. Mike managed to get a picture even though he was by himself, which is very difficult to do. Before leaving Mike told us he had a great trip and plans on returning a second time later in the summer.

Weather was super for this time of year and the Fishing was even better to end our last open week of the 2012 Fishing Season.

Long time guest Bill Hochstetter from Rockford, IL brought, for his first trip to Fireside Lodge, brother-in-law Jim Trier from Byron, IL. 1^st day Jim hit the grand slam as he caught Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, and landed his first ever Musky. Second day was very windy but they managed to still catch some Smallies, & spent the majority of their day looking for that Big Musky that eluded them today. 3^rd day they had fun catching some Smallmouth Bass catching a half dozen Pike. 4th day had them having a lot of follows, catching 8 nice Northern Pike up to the mid 30” range.

These two do not lack having fun with each other continuously giving each other jazz, finding them at the end of the day enjoying a refreshment & a fine cigar. 5^th & final day, in search for a big fish, they caught some nice fish in the 28-32” range plus they had some big fish follows, or as Bill always says “they surrounded them” but had no takers. As Bill was describing their day he say there was no lack of action with fish strikes, and some lost fish. They both said they had a great time during their stay, making brother-in-law fishing memories.

First time guests Brian Klimes & son Zachary from Willow Springs, IL and Michael Spencer & son Robert from Burr Ridge, IL were excited to try out some new waters. DOA & 1^st day was spent gaining some knowledge of Little Vermilion Lake by exploring & finding some areas we discussed at the tackle shop. Whenever fishing new waters there are adjustments to be made in finding fishing locations & productive presentations.

Well, this group did very well doing this as by the second day they were right into the fish catching over 30 Smallmouth Bass of various sizes, including a lot of bigger Smallies, with Mike catching 2 master Anglers Award Trophy Smallmouth Bass at 18 and a GIANT 20”.  They also caught a number of nice Northern Pike with Zack catching a 30”er, & also coming up with a 34” while fishing a surface Whopper Plop per given to them by long time guests Jane & Bob Babcock through a random act of kindness. The frosting on the cake was Brian hooking into & landing a GIANT 44” Muskie on a Hula Popper. WOW!!! What a great day fishing & catching. 3^rd & final day was another “FABULOUS” day for these fathers & sons catching 25 Smallmouth Bass per boat & numerous Northern Pike, with Zack landing a BIG 31”er, Robert catching a 34” Pike again on the Whopper Plop per. He also, on this same lure, caught his 1^st ever Muskie measuring in at 33”.

Mike Ubelherr from Stow, Oh returned for his second trip with us this year & for his 7^th time. 1^st day out Mike caught 5 nice Northern Pike and saw a heart stopper Muskie, as it followed his lure then just swam off slowly. 2^nd day was very windy but Mike still caught some nice Northern Pike including a 34” heavy Pike. Third day looked like a beautiful fishing day being overcast and calm, but the fish were not agreeing. 4^th & final day was great even though Mike had to battle the high winds & waves all day long by himself. It is a challenge to control the boat, fish, hook & land a fish by yourself, let alone in tough lake conditions.

On top of that Mike caught a good number of nice size Northern Pike, & had a few big boys follow his lure to the boat. Mike has been working on getting pictures of his fish catches and a few turned out good. The one your seeing was his best photo of the bunch & was taken on the roughest day. Mike had another great stay with us & plans on returning in 2013.

Dean & Sandra Hagness from Custer, WI were visiting us at Fireside Lodge for their first time. DOA Sandy stole the show catching 4 nice Pike right off the bat including a 35”Pike with HUGE girth.

1^st day of fishing they did very well catching 10 Smallmouth Bass and 10 Northern Pike with Dean landing a big Smallmouth fly-fishing measuring just short if 18” and Sandy caught a Trophy 19” Smallmouth Bass. GREAT 1^st day fishing anywhere.

Fly Fishing at Fireside Lodge for Trophy Smallmouth Bass in Canada

 Third day they had a good fishing day catching 15 fish, with 10 being Northern Pike & the rest Smallmouth Bass. Another highlight of their day was having a shore lunch by Twin Falls. They really enjoyed the Falls area, amazed at the amount of water that flows through this area, and had fun cooking lunch over an open fire. The only problem is there was too much to eat and it seemed to slow them down a bit. That evening Dean fished by himself catching 8 nice Northern Pike in 90 minutes, which made the fish total for the day 23. 3^rd day they caught 4 Smallmouth Bass and 6 Pike with a major cold front hitting us in the afternoon. 4^th & final day was a portage for Muskie & Smallmouth Bass. Spending about a half day there they did great as they caught some nice Smallmouth, Sandy landing two HUGE Trophy Bass, largest being over 18.5”. Also, Dean caught the Muskie he was searching for landing a beauty, 37” fat fish.

The second half day was on Little Vermillion Lake were they caught some great Northern Pike including a 34” and a GIANT 39.5” Pike. Great finish to a wonderful fishing trip for these two, as they left telling us we had the best service, accommodations, everything being top notch compared to there many trips elsewhere.

Bob & Jon Rheinhardt from Orland Park & Aurora, IL returned to Fireside Lodge for their 9^th year. Their home away from home, as Bob

calls it. The DOA Bob wasted no time as before supper he caught a 32.5 “ Musky & 5 Northern Pike at 28”, 32” 34” 38.5” and a HOG Trophy Pike measuring 45.5”. They caught 4 more pike after supper. WOW, what a great start.

1^st full day they caught a bunch of Northern Pike up to 31” & Jon in an attempt to catching up to his dad, hooked & landed an enormous 42” Northern Pike. Jon is every bit of 6’3” and the fish looks big with him holding it. 2^nd day had them catching a lot of Northern Pike up to 32”. 3^rd day had them catching Pike up to 31” & saw a few huge fish. One was a Muskie which followed Jon in two times estimated to be in the mid-40” range. 4^th day they had a fabulous day catching some Northern Pike & 5 Muskie. “That’s right 5 Musky”. John landed the largest, a fat 38”er.

5th & 6^th days they caught a lot of Northern Pike in the 26 to 35” range, a few Muskie, & saw some “Big Dogs” which eluded there fishing skills. Both had another GREAT father & son Fishing trip at Fireside Lodge.

Brothers Russell & David Maynard from St Joseph, MO & Seattle, WA were fishing at Fireside Lodge for their first time. First day they learned a portion of Little Vermilion Lake catching some nice Northern Pike & Smallmouth Bass in the process. 2^nd day they choose to use some live bait to increase their numbers & did it ever as they were back at noon for more leeches. At the end of the day they caught close to 30 Smallmouth Bass with David landing a HUGE 19” Master Anglers Award Trophy Smallmouth Bass.

Their 3^rd / 4^th & final days produced the same results catching 25-30 fish per day, with most Smallmouth being 14-17.5” & David caught another Trophy Smallmouth Bass at 18.5”. They also caught various sizes of Pike. In the end these two brothers had continuous conversation, many laughs, & made another set of fishing memories together.
