Fireside Lodge Fishing Report 6/27 to 7/4 2015

 

HUGE Trophy 45-inch Muskie by Cole while fishing with Grandpa Lloyd at Fireside Lodge

Weather was excellent with high temperatures being 68 to 72F and lows in the 50’s having big rain events a few times giving us lots of water in concise bursts keeping the water levels up. The fishing was excellent, as you will see from the photos & fish tales below.

Big Smallmouth Bass Fishing by Travis

returned for their 2^nd year in a row & joining them this year was Ralph’s sons Todd Columbia Hgts, MN & Travis from Dallas, TX   1st day was a terrific start catching as a group over 120 northern Pike. 2^nd day was searching for Big fish & Steve came up with the prize landing a HUGE 41.5” 25lb+ Northern Pike with a girth that draped over Steve’s hands. Next day was a numbers day catching 30 Northern Pike per boat. 4^th day had

Walleye Fishing at Fireside Lodge

Ralph catching the biggest Northern Pike of his life landing a 41” Trophy. 5^th day had Todd & Travis off on a portage lake after some walleye. They accomplished their goal catching 11 walleye between 20-25” plus about 50+ Pike. 5^th & final day had the group catching well over 100 Northern Pike & a few Smallies. All left having a fabulous time making priceless memories.

42.5-inch Musky fishing at Fireside Lodge by AL Fish

12-Year consecutive year return guests Rob Delamatre & Al Fishhaber from Sandusky & Northfield, OH were excited to arrive. 1^st day these two started with a bang catching over 100 Northern Pike & Rob caught a HUGE 42.5” Musky that was following his prop. He sighted the fish, casted at it, & the Musky ate his Mepps Spinner. Both were able to see the entire event unfold.

2^nd day they caught close to 30 Pike 28-36” & some Smallmouth Bass. Third day was a little tougher as Al said they had to work for the fish thy caught but still ended with a good day. 4^th day was a portage for Muskie catching a 32” & 35”er. 5^th day was spent catching many 28 to 36 inch Northern Pike. 6^th & final day Rob caught 42 Pike before lunch and both ended up with over 70 & were back to the dock by 2:30PM to start their travels home. They had a great time and intend on returning in 2016.

Trophy Smallmouth Bass Fishing at Fireside Lodge by Stacey

Long time return guest Terry Willis, son Lyle, friend Nate Hendricks Erwin, TN brother Joe from Spruce Pine, NC, along with Stacey & Traci Noblett from Dardanelle, AR arrived ready to fish. 1^st day Terry & Lyle caught 81 Northern Pike while Joe (fly-fishing) & Nate landed well over 40. Stacey & Traci had a special event as they saw 3 black bear. 2^nd day Stacey & Traci caught over 50 Pike and the rest of the crew had a similar day.

Also Joe learned a new technique called the “Do Noting Approach” to fly-fishing. 3^rd day Lyle was top dog as while Muskie fishing, & after seeing many fish, landed three. Great day Muskie fishing anywhere. 4^th day Terri & Lyle tore it up by catching 141 Northern Pike & Terri had 2 Muskie the biggest being a HUGE 40.5” Monster. Joe & Nate did very well also, Joe landing all his fly-fishing. 5th day Stacey & Traci did so well they had to quit after landing over 100 Northern Pike. They were worn out and plenty satisfied. All went home very happy but a little sad that their long awaited fishing trip came to an end.

Richard, Steve, & Rick Sulc from Chesterland, Chagrin Falls, & Plain City, OH were here for their 1^st visit. 1st day ever on our waters & they caught a lot of Northern Pike, then switched to Muskie fishing and saw more BIG fish than they had ever seen in their lives. 2nd day they caught 25-30 Smallmouth Bass & 15+ Pike 28 to 32”,

Steve landing a nice 36” Muskie. 3rd day this group did outstanding catching 105 Northern Pike & several Smallmouth Bass. 4th day was a portage where they caught some very nice Smallmouth, a few Northern Pike, & Steve landed a 39.5” Muskie. Rick had a much larger one on but lost it near the boat when his lure broke in the intense fight. They also had countless follows by BIG Muskie. 5^th day they caught more Pike than they could count having an absolute ball. 6^th & final day they were in search for Mr. Big. Well they saw a few trophies and caught some nice pike up to the mid 30”range. All had a wonderful time & intend on returning.

Richard Santos returned for his 2^nd consecutive year with good friend Dennis Collins from Pasco & Kennewick, WA. 1^st day Dennis said it was the best Smallmouth Bass Fly Fishing he has experienced. 2^nd day was a little slower but still caught plenty of

fish. 3^rd day they caught many Pike & Smallmouth Bass with Dennis catching a GIANT 19.5” Trophy Fly Fishing. 4^th day was a quantity day catching countless smaller Smallmouth but Richard came up with a Trophy 18.5”er. 5^th day lots of bass were caught especially after the heavy rain the Smallmouth turning on hitting top water lures & flies. 6^th & final day was fabulous catching many Pike & Smallmouth Bass, some Trophy size, with Dennis catching a 19” and on the last fish of the day Richard came up with an 18.5” Master Anglers Smallie. They had a Great fishing trip, Dennis saying that we have premier Smallmouth Bass lakes & is paradise for any fishing especially a fly fisher.

 

Super Northern Pike Fishing at Fireside Lodge by Roy & Ross

Long time return guests Father & son Roy & Ross Lagerblade from Rock Island, IL & Crestwood, KY brought both of Ross’s sons Reese & Rex for their traditional family fishing adventure. DOA they caught fish immediately with Roy having the catch of the day landing a 37.5” Northern Pike. 1^st full day was FABULOUS as they caught 74 Northern Pike, Roy catching another 37” Pike, but the catch of the day was by 10-year old Rex landing a HUGE 20.5” Trophy

Reese with his Biggest Smallmouth Bass Fishing at Fireside Lodge

Smallmouth Bass. Next day was all about Muskie fishing getting a lot of BIG follows but no takers. 3^rd day was a portage for Muskie with Roy coming out the top dog landing a nice 35”er. 4^th day was their best day ever fishing as they caught over 120 Northern Pike having a number of triples & catching 4 at once a few times. Roy & Ross said they never saw anything like it in all their years fishing and the kids had an absolute ball. 5^th day was a great finish catching 40 Northern Pike while in search of the Big Beast which eluded them. All had a great time and made many 3 generation memories.

Returning for the 2^nd time were father Shawn, & sons Sean, & David Rellinger Chicago, IL and nephew Rob from Glen Ellyn, IL. 1^st day was spent portaging for Musky & Smallmouth Bass. Rob caught his 1^st ever Muskie, they all had many follows plus David, Shawn, & Sean all caught HUGE Smallmouth Bass at 17.75”, 18.5”, & 19”. 2^nd day they applied some new techniques with suspending & sinking lures catching some very nice Pike in the 30”+ class. 3^rd day was a portage experience for Sean & David while Shawn & Rob were after bigger Pike all catching fish & Sean & David have many stories to tell & memories to share of their portage experience. 4^th day was nothing less than fabulous as they caught over 40 Northern Pike per boat. 5th & final day they again caught many Northern Pike but got pushed off the water by heavy rain & lighting. All left having had a GREAT time.

Guest since 1995 Lloyd Morton returned with grandson Cole from Lawrence, OH. DOA they got a great start catching several Pike about 20 Smallmouth Bass Cole landing an 18.5” Trophy. 1^st day was TERRIFIC as they caught well over 50 Pike & 20 Smallmouth including 3 Trophies using the drop shot rig for the Bass. 2^nd day was a little tougher but still caught some nice Smallies. 3^rd day was

HUGE 19.5-inch Trophy Smallmouth Bass Fishing at Fireside Lodge

another great day catching Smallmouth Bass both landing trophy fish & also had some Pike mixed in. 4^th day was a very good day as they caught some nice Northern Pike & Grandpa & Grandson caught back-to-back Muskie. Lloyd’s was a 38.5” Tiger Muskie looking small compared to Cole’s Trophy Musky measuring 45” & having a GIANT girth. Well Cole was the talk of the dinning room that evening & all noticed the smiles on their faces. 5^th day they had a good day fishing between T-Storms catching 14 Nice Northern Pike, Cole had a 34” plus a 35” Muskie & 36 “ Tiger Musky. They ended their trip catching Pike & some big Smallmouth Bass each landing 5 Trophy Smallmouth Bass for the week. The biggest catch however was the memories made between Grandpa & Grandson.

Long time guests since 1993, David & Kathie Drake from West Terra Haute, IN were glad to be back. DOA was great as they caught at least a dozen Smallmouth Bass 16.5 to 18” with Kathie catching a Trophy at 18.5”. 1^st day had them catching Smallmouth & a few Pike. 2^nd day was great as they caught over 30 nice Smallmouth Bass each catching a Trophy over 18”. 3^rd day was a day spent

fishing unfamiliar areas for Northern Pike doing very well & David had a HUGE Muskie grab his lure but spit it out instantly before he was able to set the hook. 4^th day was fun catching about 14 Smallmouth between 15-17” & David caught a 36” Pike with HUGE girth, before they got chased in at noon by T-Storms. 5^th & final day was a fabulous day with an amazing ending as at 4:30 PM David caught the freshwater fish of his life landing a huge 44.5” Tiger Musky & after that Kathie caught 5 Big Smallmouth Bass one after another with the largest being an 18.5” Trophy. They left having another wonderful time fishing in our wilderness atmosphere at Fireside Lodge.

This week brought about an equal amount of rain & sunshine along with fishing that was remarkable.

HUGE Smallmouth Bass Fishing by Linda at Fireside Lodge

Returning guests since 1994, Mike & Linda Lapresi from Tucker, GAwere thrilled to be back. 1^st morning before breakfast Mike caught 10 Smallmouth & lost 3. Rest of the day they both caught a lot of Smallmouth with their predictable methods, Linda a Torpedo & Mike Fly-Fishing a popper. 2^nd day was fabulous catching over 40

Fly-Fishing for Trophy Smallmouth Bass at Fireside Lodge by Mike

Smallmouth Bass plus missing others on the surface. 3^rd day they had terrific fun catching countless Northern Pike. Linda was on fire catching most of the fish on buzz baits & it was said her excitable reaction could be felt & heard far away. 4^th day was another over 40 Smallmouth Bass day while missing many others, only having about a 50% hook up rate. That’s a lot of action. 5^th day was just ½ day of fishing ending the way they started catching nice Smallies on the surface. They had a fabulous stay & hope to return.

Trophy Smallmouth Bass by Dan

Best Friends Don Landbo & Dan Szkola from S Elgin & Sugar Grove, IL returned for their 12^th consecutive year. DOA they broke their streak of slow starts as they did very well catching 16 Smallmouth Bass before & after supper Dan landing 2 trophy bass at 19 & 18.5”. 1st full day they portaged to George Lake catching19 Northern Pike. 2^nd day they caught 187 Northern Pike & 13 Smallmouth Bass, Don catching an 18.25”er. 3^rd day was another Great Northern Pike day as they caught 128 plus 4 Smallmouth Bass. 4^th day they targeted Smallmouth Bass catching 36, Don with another Trophy 18” fish, plus 5 Northern Pike. 

 

Many HUGE Smallies Fishing at Fireside Lodge

5^th day was remarkable as they caught 120 Northern Pike. Don was on fire catching 2/3rds of the fish on buzz baits. 6^th & final day was very similar as they caught 114 Pike & 4 Smallmouth Bass. Both left having a great time & reserved their dates for 2016.

Bob & Dean Miles, John Fields, Freedman, Cleveland, & Lee Summit, MO Jim Bartling, John Johnson, James Hover, & Kris Gamble Overland Pk, Olathe, KS & Ted Hollo Aurora, OH were hear from their 1^st visit. 

 

1st Musky ever Fishing at Fireside Lodge by Dean

DOA day was spent learning new waters & catching some fish. 1^st full day they had a remarkable day catching 372 Northern Pike, which as a group was their best day ever. Next day was a day that all caught fish with Jim B seeming to do the best including a 35” Pike, however at the end of the day Kris came up with the Big fish prize landing a 39” Northern Pike.

After some discussion on the next morning about fishing location & techniques for using a suspending stick bait John J & Ted became believers quickly as Ted caught 5 Pike one after another up to 32” & John landed two Muskie in the mid 30” range along with Pike up to 33”. Also, Jim H & Dean both landed Muskie and for Dean it was his 1^st ever.

4^th day all caught more Northern Pike using the same techniques & had a fabulous group shore lunch. Kris caught the two Big fish of the day landing a 38” Northern Pike. 5^th & final day was a great finish as some Big Pike were caught. John F had one at 35”, John J a large 38.5”, but Kris took top billing landing a Trophy 42” Northern Pike. Before departing group leader Bob reserved their dates for 2016.

For the 13^th consecutive year Paul Capecchi returned with son Tony from Inver Grove Hgts & Woodbury, MN. When they walked in the door they expressed that they were back home.  DOA they caught 2 Muskie, 2 SB, & 15 Northern Pike. 1^st full day was their personal

1 of a 7 Muskie Day Fishing at Fireside Lodge

best Muskie day ever catching 7, Paul caught the 1^st of the day on his very 1^st cast, & Tony caught 5 including a 40.5” very large Musky. 2^nd day they caught 165 Northern Pike & 1 Trophy 18”SB. Day 3 had them catching 110 Pike & 2 Smallmouth 1 being an 18”er. 4^th day was a 92 Northern Pike day along with 4 Smallmouth Bass. 5^th day it was 111 Northern Pike & 1 Bass and the 6^th & final day Tony caught a fay 33” Tiger Muskie & together caught 93 Northern Pike and ended their day & trip with their 63^rd Northern Pike double of the week.

Tony & Paul made another set of wonderful father & son memories conversing, meeting other guests, & seeing wildlife including 5 Moose. Before leaving Paul secured their reservation for 2016.

Returning for the 2^nd time was the Spartz family Jack, Dan, Adam, & Ryan from Sycamore, IL & Columbus / Greenwood, IN. 1^st day this

Over 60 Smallmouth Bass Day Fishing at Fireside Lodge

group caught 76 Northern Pike and 2^nd day they had fabulous Smallmouth Fishing catching well over 60 Smallmouth Bass. 3^rd day had them searching for large fish having Muskie follows, Ryan had 1 on that got off, Adam landed a 35” Musky. They also caught some Northern Pike with Adam cashing in again catching a 39.5” BIG Northern Pike. 4th and final day Adam & Ryan accounted for 99 Northern Pike & 1 Smallmouth Bass while Jack & Dan caught well over 50 Northern Pike. All left having a very enjoyable three generations family fishing trip & hope to return.

Jim Pim returned with his group for the 4th time of Rich Pim, Steve Howlett, Less Scheurich, Robert Dorsey, & Dale Wilson from Shell Knob, Joplin, Sarcoxie, & Carthage, MO. DOA this group got right to with Jim & Steve catching 25 SB & 10 NP, Les & Dale had 30+ SB with Rich & Robert catching close to 60 SB. 1^st full day was GREAT as a group they caught close to 275 NP & 25 SB. Robert caught 3

GREAT Trophy Smallmouth Bass Fishing at Fireside Lodge by Steve

trophy SB 18-19” & Jim had 1 over 18”. 2^nd day was all about Smallmouth Bass catching the majority being 15-18”. Rich got an 18.5”er. 3^rd day Les & Dale caught 72 Smallmouth Bass which was tops for the group in a day, & the other 2 boats caught well over 100 fish in each boat mostly being Pike. 4^th & final day our discussions worked as Dale caught 2 trophy Smallmouth Bass at 18.25 & 19.5”. All caught plenty more Smallmouth Bass to finish another great fishing trip. Les & Dale kept close records of their catches in 4 days they caught 287 Smallmouth Bass & over 100 Northern Pike. All left saying see ya next year.

arrived full of anticipation. 1^st two days this group got a feel for the waters each day catching a mix of 10-20 Northern Pike & Smallmouth Bass. 3^rd day was the best Northern Pike fishing these 3 ever had as the landed well over 100 Pike had many misses & follows. 4^th day was another great Pike fishing day catching over 50. 5th day was a portage lake for

Trophy Size Walleye Fishing at Fireside Lodge by Paul

Smallmouth & Musky. They were amazed at the number of BIG Muskie they saw but unfortunately were not able to hook up on one. That’s Musky fishing however they did get into some Smallmouth with Roland catching two trophy Smallies at 18” & 19”. 6^th & final day was off to another portage & they did great catching Many Pike and 11 Walleye between 20 to 24”. They had a great fishing trip & said they hope to return.

Brothers Mike & Jim McDonough from Pinetop, AZ & Rescue, CA returned for their 3^rd time. 1^st day these two went out & caught a lot of nice Northern Pike up to 32” both having double digit catches. 2^nd day was a portage for Muskie & this brother team did well landing 3 Muskie up to the Mid-30” range. Mike caught all 3 but Jim got the assist. 3^rd day was another great Pike fishing day with each landing more ten 10 nice Northern Pike. 4^th & 5^th days were both good days catching Northern Pike along with a few Smallmouth Bass. Both enjoyed their stay enabling them to spend some valued brotherly time together.

Back for their 2^nd year in a row were Phil Martin & Rock Snow from Findlay, OH. 1^st day they caught about 14 Northern Pike each. 2^nd day they were searching for Muskie in Cedarbough Lake & the Musky won as they saw some big fish but could not get them to cooperate. 3^rd and final full day they did the best landing over 40 Northern Pike & had a lot follows & lost some fish. Both left having a short but enjoyable stay.

Trophy 42-inch Northern Pike by Sarah Fishing at Fireside Lodge

Besides 1 windy day the weather this week was pleasant staying on the cool side in the morning but warming up nicely by noon. The fish were biting and BIG fish really showed up this week.

Robert Payseur & Jan Anderson from West Des Moines, IA were here for there 1^st time. 1^st day they got familiar and caught some nice

GREAT Smallmouth Bass Fishing at Fireside Lodge by Jan

Smallmouth Bass. After a little discussion about a different section of the lake they went exploring their 2^nd day doing fabulous getting into a bunch of Smallmouth Bass, catching over 40 & a lot were over 17” most being over 16” and they also had a few trophy size over 18”. 3^rd day they caught some fish but it was a tough windy day for all. 4^th day was another very good day Smallmouth fishing catching many more 15-17”er plus Ted caught 2 more trophies at 18” and a HUGE  19”er. 5^th & final day was spent catching a mix of Northern Pike & Smallmouth, landing a few more trophies. They ended up for their 5 days with Jan catching a total of 6 Smallmouth at 18” & Ted had 8 18”ers and one Monster at 19.5”. They left having great fun and considering a return in early September.

 

38-inch Northern Pike by Dick Fishing at Fireside Lodge

Returning for his 4^th time from Gatlinburg, TN was Dick Klose bringing his brother Pete from Morristown for his 1^st trip. DOA they found fish quickly & Dick landed a nice 34”er. Next day they struggled however after discussing technique with the You-Zuri & X-Rap lures they purchased from me they were very excited about their results from that evening. Dick, after applying this technique, caught 4 Pike in 4 casts, 2 more in 6 more casts and lost one. Next day they were both successful again and by the end of the day it was 16 to 4, Dick being ahead of Pete. 3rd day had them catching more Pike with the same technique & Dick caught his biggest, a huge 38”er. 4^th day was very windy which made them give up after just a few hours but that evening they caught some nice Pike. Last day they finished with more Northern Pike, applying their new fishing technique, & had some huge follows. Both had a great trip & hope to return.

Miller & granddaughters Katie & Ollie from Orleans, East Lansing, & Alto, MI were visiting Fireside Lodge for their 1^st time. This family was full of vim & vigor on arrival & on their first day enjoyed learning some of the lake & caught some fish. After some tackle purchases & a lake review they went out

& caught a bunch of Northern Pike, on their new lures, & Sarah had a HUGE Pike or Muskie up to the boat but the fish got off. This group seemed to energize the whole dinning room as they were always having fun, laughing, and were 110% positive. Well this all seemed to work for this wonderful family as on their 3^rd & final day they went out & caught many Northern Pike all catching some before lunch. The afternoon brought more Pike & a few Smallmouth

& Teri caught an 18” Trophy. The Big story was when Sarah hooked into another Monster fish & ended up landing a 42” Trophy Northern Pike with GIANT girth. All were involved with the landing of this fish especially Katie & Ollie who were a team in helping land this fish of a lifetime for their mother using the cradle we provide. All left having a wonderful family vacation making lasting memories together & a lifetime of story telling. Thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge for this important family event.

Long time Guests Ken Beta from Fox Lake, IL returned with his wife Sandi & friends Scott & Nancy Dubois from Pleasant Prairie, WI for their 1^st time. 1st day on the water Sandi showed all how it was done catching most of the fish plus a trophy 18.5” Smallmouth Bass. 2^nd day it was so windy they waved the white flag by early afternoon. 3^rd day they caught a mix of Smallmouth Bass & Pike with Ken coming up with a Trophy 18” Smallmouth. 4^th day was a great day as they caught many nice Northern Pike, a few Whitefish and Scott landed his 1^st Trophy Smallmouth Bass measuring 19.5”, plus all had loads of fun & laughter. 5^th & final day they had fabulous fun with both Pike & Bass, Ken landing another 18”er. Nancy also had good success on her new lure, a Yo-Zuri suspending crank. All left having had a blast & hope to return.

GIANT 43-inch Trophy Northern Pike 

annual June group Dick Oksana & Jim Jones from Mabank & McKinney, TX, John Hietala & Terry Ahrens from Northfield & Plymouth, MN plus Bruce Layborne from Cincinnati, OH. DOA Walt, John, & Terry got into some BIG Northern Pike with Walt catching a 38” & John caught a Trophy 40” Northern Pike on a yellow twister tail. GREAT START!!! 1^st day they caught a bunch of nice Pike with Walt landing a 35” plus a HUGE Trophy measuring 43”. Next day

Trophy Northern Pike Fishing by Terry at Fireside Lodge

was unreal as Walt landed another Trophy Pike at 41”, however Terry had the story of the day. Dick had a hook accident so when Jim took Dick to the hospital to get his finger attended to Terry went fishing alone. He hooked into a GIANT Northern Pike & the fight was on. Scott & Nancy (above) were near by and went to assist & Terry ended up landing a 42” Trophy Northern Pike by himself. 3^rd day was another amazing Big fish day with Jim catching a 43” Northern Pike, an 18” Smallmouth Bass & John also caught an 18” Smallie. Now both John & Jim, if the catch a Trophy Muskie, could accomplish the trifecta in Master Anglers Catches during one stay, which would be a 1^st. 4^th & final day one boat searched for BIG fish & Jim had a 40”+ on which he lost at the boat and the other boat caught well over 100 Pike. All left having had a great time.

Jerry Amer & Bill Calhoon from Columbus, OH returned for their 14^th year in a row. 1^st day they did great catching many Smallmouth

GREAT BIG Northern Pike by Bill Fishing at Fireside Lodge

Bass Fly-Fishing with poppers. 2^nd day was amazing fishing catching 25 big Northern Pike and 22 Smallmouth Bass. 3^rd day was all about Muskie. After a slow morning their patience & persistence paid off as they started to get follows and by the end of the day landed 6 Muskie, largest being 39.5”. Great Musky day in any fish log. They also managed to catch about 10 Smallmouth that day. 4^th & final day was FABULOUS as the caught about 50 Pike and 26 Smallmouth, Bill landing 4 Trophies and Jerry got 1. Both left having a great trip a reserved their dates for 2016.

Dan Mosier from Lincoln Nebraska returned for his 18^th consecutive year with his daughter Sarah for her 2^nd trip. DOA & 1^st day they

My 1st Trophy Smallmouth Bass caught Fishing at Fireside Lodge

caught fish right away with Sarah catching a 35” Northern Pike & a her 1^st ever Muskie catching a 34”er + many bass. 2^nd day was all Pike landing over 20 fish 28-33” plus a few Smallmouth. 3^rd day was a super day catching well over 100 Northern Pike & also caught some Smallmouth Bass. On their last two days they did well fishing between rainstorms catching a lot of Smallmouth Bass & Northern Pike. Sarah had 2 firsts on this trip catching her 1^st Muskie ever and catching her 1^st Trophy Smallmouth Bass measuring 18”. Both left making special father & daughter memories that will last a lifetime.

John Murphy from Bloomfield, MI returned for his 3rd trip with his son & Grandsons Bryan, Quinn, & Jake from Darien, CT. 1^st day they did great catching over 50 Northern Pike. Second day they had fun portaging for Smallmouth. 3^rd & final day they finished with a bang catching, as quoted by Brian, a Gazillion Northern Pike. Quinn & Jake had loads of fun fishing & playing cards with their dad & grandpa, and all made three generations memories to last a lifetime.
