Fireside Lodge Fishing Report 6/21 to 6/28 2014

43.5-inch Trophy Muskie by Dan Mosier

This was an amazing week fishing at Fireside Lodge especially for #’s of Pike caught & Trophy Smallmouth Bass.

Long time return guests Dan Skolza & Don Landbo from Sugar Grove

Monster Trophy Smallmouth Bass by Don Landbo

& S Elgin, IL were back for the 11^th time. 1^st day they caught 36 Northern Pike. 2nd day they caught 83 Northern Pike. 3rd day brought 83 Pike & 11 Smallmouth with 4-18.5 to 19”, 3rd day was 60 Pike & 13 Smallmouth 1-18.5”. 4^th day was all about Smallmouth catching 61 & Dan landed 3 Trophies between 18 to 19”. 5^th day as they were catching 95 Northern Pike on Buzz Baits Don decided to cast away from shore & had a HUGE 40” Musky explode on his lure landing it after a great fight. 6^th & final day had them finishing with 73 Pike & 16 Smallmouth Bass & Dan catching the biggest Bass of the trip at 19.5”. Great Fishing, Great Fun, & Great Memories.

Dan Mosier from Lincoln Nebraska returned for his 17^th consecutive year with son Nathan for his 8^th. 1^st day they did great catching 16

Pike & 12 Smallmouth Bass with Nathan landing an 18” Trophy. 2^nd day was terrific as they caught 113 Northern Pike and Dan caught a HUGE 43” barred Muskie & Nathan got the assist & took a great photo. 3^rd day was all about catching Smallmouth Bass & they caught a bunch. 4^th day they had a ball catching Smallmouth Bass all day long. Both have so much fun as they are always experimenting with lures & the best thing about today was the surface bite. 5^th & final day they faced a cold front with high winds & only fished for 4 hours having fun catching a mix of Pike & Bass. Both left logging their 9^th year of making father & son fishing memories with us at Fireside Lodge.

Erwin & Unicoi, TN returned with 2 time guests John, Wendel, & Wesley Davidson & Fred Beard from Dungannon, Castlewood, & Lebanon, VA, & Kingsport, TN and 1^{st

Many BIG Smallmouth Bass by Wesley} timer JD McCurry from Erwin, TN. 1^st day All had a good Smallmouth Bass day with John & Jerry doing the best catching 50. John landed 5 Trophy Smallmouth over 18” & Jerry had 2. 2^nd day was all about Northern Pike & here are the #’s. Wendel & Wesley 112, Jerry & John over 150, Larry & JD 96 & JD had 37 himself having never caught a pike before this trip, & Fred & Pete caught 50+. 3^rd day was a Smallmouth day & as a group they caught 106 landing many trophy

Smallmouth & Larry was tops in that category catching 6, one measuring 20”. 4^th day Jerry & JD caught 25 Smallmouth Bass with 2 trophies, Larry & John caught a 30” Musky & 20 Smallmouth including an 18.5 & 19.5”er & Wesley & Wendel did the best catching 67 Smallmouth Bass having 3 doubles, a lot were 17-18”. 5^th day because of a severe cold front half the crew stayed back but Larry, John, Wendel, & Wesley persevered the weather with good results as they caught 125 Northern Pike. 6^th & final day was just gangbusters as they caught 375 Northern Pike with many being 27-29” up o 32” & Larry caught a Trophy 42” Giant Pike. All left just as excited as they came & Larry made their reservations for 2015 before departing.

Paul Capecchi from Inver Grove Hgts, MN returned for his 12^th consecutive year & 13^th trip bringing for the 1^st time son-in law Dustin Ver Ploeg & 6-year old grandson Issac from Sully, IA. DOA this trio caught many Pike & Isaac caught a huge Trophy Smallmouth Bass at 18” & received his 1^st ever citation award. 1^st full day was a great Northern Pike day catching 44 & 3 Smallmouth Bass & Isaac had his first battle with a Muskie that jumped & got off. 2^nd day they caught 75 Pike with 3 Bass & had a wonderful shore lunch. memorable as Dustin & Isaac teamed up to catch their 1^st ever Musky together. It was very fun to hear Isaac explain in his words that “my dad hooked the Musky and I wound in the Muskie.” When I saw the photos of Issac it reminded me of what fishing should be about, Fun, family, & memories. All made unforgettable memories & were already planning for a future family event.

Setzer from St Peters, Tom Wolf from High Ridge, MO & Bob Hanewinkel from Hillsboro were back to hunt BIG Smallmouth Bass. DOA John set the pace with the 1^st 18.5” Trophy. 1^st full day they caught a minimum of 50 Smallmouth Bass in each boat, & as a group 22 Master Anglers Trophy Bass

Super Fishing From Trophy Smallmouth Bass

18-19.5”. 2^nd day both boats did well catching 35+ Smallmouth Bass. 3^rd day Dave & John had a special day catching 90-100 fish with over half being Smallmouth Bass including 17 Trophy Bass 18-20”. They had three doubles, 2 in a row where 3 of the 4 fish were over 18”. John caught a 20”er & both caught 19.5” Smallies. 4^th day Dave & Bob were tops catching close to 60 Smallmouth Bass 11 being Trophy Fish over 18” & each landed a 19.5”er. Tom & John caught about 25 Smallies. 5^th & 6^th days were also great fishing for this group & after the final tally they ended up catching 83 trophy Smallmouth Bass 18’ or greater, biggest were 20.5 & 20” along with 100’s of Smallies 15-18”.

GREAT Pike Fishing in Canada At Fireside Lodge

John Murphy from Bloomfield, MI returned for his 2^nd trip with his son & Grandsons Bryan, Quinn, & Jake from Darien, CT. First day these four caught so many Pike they lost count. The three generations had a ball catching fish all day long. 2^nd day was another Big Northern Pike day as the four of them caught over 100 Northern Pike & Quinn caught his biggest ever, a 27” pike. In fact John, before dinner asked me where some smallmouth were as he did not want to see another Pike that evening. 3^rd & final day brought them cold front conditions but fantastic action as this three generations foursome caught over 150 Northern Pike and John had the wounds to prove it. All went home having a fabulous fun family fishing vacation & brought back priceless memories.

Terrific Fun Fishing at Fireside Lodge

Wayne Farabough from Bixby, OK returned for his 2^nd trip with a group of guys from his home area Wayne Choisnet, Preston & Gary Hale, Darrell Creamer, Glenn Zellner, Chuck Watson, & Bill Towner from Bixby, Jenks, & Tulsa, OK. 1^st day out they had a lot of fun, & no doubt what was catching Smallmouth Bass for this group as they bought 6 tiny torpedo lures from me at suppertime. 2^nd day all did well catching many Smallmouth Bass & a few Northern Pike. 3 day all did well some on Smallmouth Bass & others on Pike. 4^th day was even better as 1 boat caught over 50 Pike & the other boats caught 35 each.

5^th & final day all had a ball catching Northern Pike & Smallmouth Bass while at lunchtime having an open fire shore lunch at Twin Falls. All had loads of fun and made many memories amongst friends & family.

22-inch Trophy Smallmouth Bass Fishing at Fireside Lodge by Les Scheurich

Jim Pim returned with his group for the 3^rd time of Rich Pim, Robert Dorsey, Mark Sappington, Steve Barton, Dale Wilson, Less Scheurich, & Doug Fitchtner from Shell Knob, Joplin, Carthage, Sarcoxie, & Diamond, MO & Galena, KS. DOA was fabulous as they caught 107 Smallmouth Bass in 4 hours before dinner, & many were 17-19”. 1^st full day was terrific as Mark & Doug caught 60+ Pike & 20 Smallmouth with 7 being 18-19.5”, Les & Dale caught 80+ Northern & 18 Smallmouth 4 over 18”, Jim & Steve caught well over 100 fish and so did Robert & Rich. 2^nd day the group caught 150 Smallmouth lot 17”+ & 2-19.5” & 3-18”. 3^rd day they caught 165 Smallmouth Bass 6 at 18” 1-19.5” with most at 15-17”. 4^th & final day just when you think it can’t get any better they caught 150 Smallmouth Bass with 21 > 18”, 1 Monster at 22” by Les & the majority of the other bass were 16-18”, plus they caught over 60 Northern Pike. WOW, what a fabulous ending to their trip.

The Kengor brothers returned for the 2^nd time this time with their dad Bill. DOA they caught 25 fish a mix of Pike & Bass. 2^nd day was gangbusters as they caught at least 50 Northern Pike. 2^nd day they were after Musky and they did well. Jeff hooked a nice Tiger Muskie which jumped & got off, Mike landed a 27” & 25” Muskie, and after getting a snag off a log Bill had a 40”+ Musky take his lure only to shake his lure off in seconds. 3^rd day was spent Muskie fishing hooking 2, landing 1, & had about 15 follows. That’s Musky fishing!! 4^th & final day was full of fun catching a lot of Northern Pike. They left really enjoying their time and making wonderful memories.

Fireside Lodge Fishing Report 6/14 to 6/21 2014

Huge Trophy 44" Northern Pike Fishing at Fireside Lodge Canada

Weather again was cooler than normal & on Thursday we had a big Nor-Easter storm dumping heavy rain with very high winds & temps dropped to 42F by 2PM. All stayed in until after supper which only happened 1 time before in 25 years.

Charles Row from Maitland, FL & Jin Deck from Ellijay, GA returned for trip 2 to Fireside Lodge. 1^st day was a non- fish day because of weather mentioned above. 2^nd day they did great catching 21

Trophy 18.5" Smallmouth Bass by Al Sins

Smallmouth, all good fish except two, including Charles landing 2 trophies one at 18.25 and the 2^nd measuring 18.5”. 2^nd day they caught less but the quality was terrific as they caught mostly 17 to 18.5” Smallmouth Bass. 3^rd day we had another big rain event with another cold front & high winds which kept Charles & Jim from fishing & the 4^th day they were grounded until after supper. 5^th day they choose not to fish because of wind. Well they saved everything for the 6^th & final day by catching 39 Smallmouth Bass while hooking and having strikes on many more. Most of the Smallmouth were BIG, with half being 17” or better & Charles caught a HUGE Trophy measuring 19.5”. Terrific end to a fabulous trip by the two most polite & positive angles anyone could ever meet.

Northern Pike Fishing is Fun at Fireside Lodge

from Asheville, NC brought Mack Cox also from Asheville and his son David from Flectcher, NC. Grounded from the storm on their first day they went out and caught a few nice Pike in the evening. The 2nd day Mack caught his first Muskie ever at 35” & AL landed two Trophy fish, an 18.5” Smallmouth Bass & a GIANT 44” Northern Pike. Al only

needs the 44” plus Muskie to get the Trophy Tri-Fecta, which has never been done by 1 person in 1 week. 3rd day had David catching his first Muskie ever and all caught plenty of Northern Pike & Don also caught a nice Muskie. 4th day Al & David caught 22 Pike with Don & Mack landing 12 along with 2 Musky. 5^th day David & Mack caught 25 Northern Pike. 6^th & final day they found some cabbage weed and had a bunch of Northern Pike in the high 20” to mid 30” range and Al missed catching a Trophy Muskie by 5” landing a large 39” Musky & Don landed a Trophy 18” Smallmouth Bass. Great finish.

Return guest Max Terrien from Littleton, NC came with good friend Henry Baque from New Iberia, LA. 1^st evening on DOA Max started out of the gate quick catching Smallmouth, Northern Pike, & Muskie. I guest he was making sure Henry believed all those fish were in the lake. Next two days Max said Pike were everywhere and both him and Henry enjoyed the fun, as they don’t have the opportunity to catch Northern Pike in NC or LA. They had two off days because of weather having had two severe cold fronts while they were here along with high winds & all day heavy rain. Last day they had a remarkable finish fishing for toothy critters, with Henry landing a 47” Giant Trophy Muskie, a 42” Tiger Musky, a 38” Northern Pike & in the netting process Max lost a 45-48” Muskie. What a way to end a fishing trip!!

Great BIG Smallmouth Fishing by David Bone in Canada

Brothers Leo & Larry Priebe from & Walter Henkels from Westchester, IL returned for their 2^nd consecutive year. 1^st & 2^nd day they did great catching Smallmouth Bass & Northern Pike landing 3 Trophy Smallmouth Bass 18 to 19.5”. 3^rd day they had terrific Smallmouth Bass fishing catching about 30 and all caught a Trophy at 18” & Leo landed a 2^nd one at 18.5”. Walter also hooked and landed an over 30” Muskie on a tube jig with no leader. 4^th day was another terrific day as they caught another 7 Trophy Smallmouth Bass over 18” & many others 15-17.5”. 5^th day was very windy affecting their catch. 6^th & final day was a half-day of great Smallie fishing before they left at 1:00 PM. All had a great time.

Reed & Peggy Harrison from Andover, KS. 1^st full day of fishing was terrific as they all caught Smallmouth Bass & Pike with the ladies coming up with the 2 largest Northern Pike. 2^nd day was a “Fabulous” day for all having loads of fun catching Smallmouth Bass & Julie hit the Big fish catching a Huge

Trophy measuring 19.5”. Ladies did it for the 2^nd day in a row. 3^rd day Mark made the leader board with a Trophy Smallmouth Bass measuring 19”. All had fun catching fish & seeing a bunch of follows. Soft Plastic baits were suggested to catch these following Pike & the next morning Mark used a sinking work & immediately caught a Northern Pike. Last day all caught plenty of Pike & Smallmouth Bass with Peggy catching two over 17”, her personal best. Also, they enjoyed a wonderful shore lunch together, which concluded a memorable trip between family & friends.

Smallmouth Fishing is Great in Canada at Fireside Lodge

Father & son Jeff & Austin Heckman from Milford, NE were fishing at Fireside Lodge for their 1^st time. 1^st day was very tough because of a heavy rainstorm with a cold front & high winds, however the 2^nd day was very successful as they caught a bunch of Smallmouth Bass & Northern Pike. 3^rd and final day they did well catching both Smallies and Northern Pike really soaking up the time together. Austin is in the Air Force Academy & their time together is short. They left making many good memories, which is the biggest catch of all.

Terrific fun Fishing in Canada for Smallmouth

Kevin Coon & Craig Debbiak from Germfask & Custer, MI were fishing with us for their 1^st time. 1^st day on the water they caught plenty of Smallmouth & Northern Pike and saw a cow moose with her calf swimming across the lake. 2^nd day they did well catching a mix of Pike & Smallies however on the morning of the 3^rd day Craig required a hack saw to refine his home made lure. Next two days these two had a ball seeing more big fish than ever before while catching some nice Northern Pike and each went home catching there 1^st ever Muskie & more fishing memories logged between two long time fishing buddies.

My 1st BIG Northern Pike by Peggy Harrison in Canada

Alan Berdan from New York, NY and Vito Racanelli were here for their 1^st fishing adventure at Fireside Lodge. 1^st day on new water was very successful as they caught many Pike in the upper 20” to 30” range & Vito caught a 37-38” BIG Northern Pike. 2^nd day was slower they caught some fish and enjoyed the beautiful day. 3^rd day was very good fishing for Northern Pike and the 4^th day they did great catching a bunch of Smallmouth Bass & Northern Pike. As Alan stated when checking out “ We left the fish biting”. Both left saying they will return.

Walt LaCasse, from Minnetonka, MN, & his group returned for their 16^th consecutive year including Dick Oksanan from Mabank, TX, John Hietala from Northfield, MN & David McCorkle from CA. 1^st day John & Walt caught a lot of Smallmouth & Walt landed a 37.5” Northern Pike while David & Dick did well catching Northern Pike. 2^nd day all had great action with Walt & David catching BIG Pike & John & Dick did great with Dick catching a Big Muskie-37”, Pike-37” & Smallmouth Bass 18.5”. 3^rd day was a slower day but the 4^th day was FABULOUS at Walt & David caught over 50 Pike while Dick & John caught a bunch of Smallmouth Bass with Dick catching 2 more trophies. Also, on Dick’s last cast he caught a 39.75” Northern Pike just missing the trophy size by1/4”. Before departing Walt made their reservations for 2015.

Fly Fishing for Trophy Smallmouth Bass

Jerry Amer & Bill Calhoon from Columbus, OH returned for their 13^th year in a row. DOA they caught 45 Smallmouth Bass with most 16.5 to 17.5”, 6 Pike and 1 big Lake Trout. 1^st day the wind made for a tough day until the last 2.5 hours when they hit some good action on Smallies. 2^nd day had them catch close to 100 fish including some Pike, mostly Smallmouth Bass including 10 Trophy size 18-19”, & Jerry caught a Muskie. 3^rd day was all about Musky as they portaged to a lake & caught two right off the bat, then Jerry said it became more like Muskie fishing. 4^th & final day was another stupendous day as they had another 100+ fish day 80% Pike & 20% Smallmouth Bass catching more trophy size bass over 18”. Before departing they reserved their dates for 2015.

Fireside Lodge Fishing Report 6/7 to 6/14 2014

Big Northern Pike at Fireside Lodge by Rick Gabehart

Weather was cooler than normal and the biggest variable to the fishers was a severe cold front with very heavy rain & high winds.

Long time guest Tony Majcher from Hawthorne Woods, Il returned for his 1^st trip with us in 2014. 1^st day on the water he found the Smallmouth Bass very aggressive on surface presentations but at 11:00 AM they shut down. 2^nd day Tony did well catching

37" Northern Pike Fishing by Tony Majcher

Smallmouth Bass on the surface using a Chug Bug. Nothing better than watching a surface lure in anticipation of that surface strike from a Smallie. He caught a Trophy measuring 18” and a HUGE 37” Northern Pike plus managed to get a good picture of each even though he was by himself. Third day was a good Northern Pike day having very good action on a #10 X-Rap & Tony had the destroyed lure in his hand to prove it. On the 4^th and final day Tony had a fabulous finish hooking 24 Smallmouth Bass and landing 17, most 15-17.5” with one being an 18.5” Trophy. Great finish to a wonderful trip & we look forward to Tony returning this August with his Grandson.

Guest since 1994 Gerald Adams from Shawnee, OK was back with his son Zack to chase Smallmouth Bass. First day was spent figuring out a pattern while catching a dozen Smallmouth Bass. 2^nd day was

better as they caught 20. 3^rd day Gerald had fast action catching 3 Trophy Smallmouth within an hour including a 18, 18.25, and a 19”er. 3^rd day was about the same. The 4^th day Gerald was on fire as he caught 9 big Smallmouth in about 75 minutes including several 17-17.5”, an 18”, 18.5” and 19”. Last day they finished strong catching 47 Smallmouth Bass with all but 2 being 15-17.5”. As much as these two enjoy their fishing they equally enjoy the story telling & conversation in the lodge and the wonderful one on one father and son time together. Even after almost 20 years they can’t get enough of this time spent together & with others. Thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge to make some of your memorable moments together.

Amazing Northern Pike Fishing Fireside Lodge Canada

Father & Son Terry & Jeff Milberger from Shawnee, KS were fishing with us for their 1^st time. Had a great first day ever on Little Vermilion Lake catching a good number of Smallmouth Bass & Northern Pike. 2^nd day was a fabulous day as they caught plenty of fish and enjoyed a shore lunch cooked over an open fire at Twin Falls. You could tell by the smiles on their faces that Terry & Jeff had a special day together. 3rd and final day, (3-days goes by fast!), they finished catching a mix of Northern Pike and Smallmouth Bass and expressed how much fun they had a suppertime. Both made wonderful father & son memories, which I have said many times is the biggest catch of all. Thanks for spending this special time together at Fireside Lodge.

Fantastic Northern Pike fishing at Fireside Lodge Canada

Long time guests Ken Beta & Jim Nelson from Fox Lake and Oak Brook, IL were back to have great fun fishing in the Canadian Wilderness, a tradition of theirs for the last 45 years. 1^st day the Smallies were slow as the colder water was still delaying their spawning activity, however the did catch a few along with some Northern Pike and Ken lucked into a HUGE 38.5” Lake Trout with an enormous girth. Unfortunately both forgot to bring a camera. Second day they did much better with the Smallmouth Bass but still sighted more than they caught. 3^rd day had them catching a mix of Smallmouth Bass & Northern Pike, and they said the bass were still not aggressive but starting to show signs of spawning, which the water has not warmed enough to set off this yearly event. 4^th day had them having a great Smallmouth Bass day catching 27 good size Smallies, and a few Northern Pike. Their 5^th day was a wash as they faced 43F with very heavy rain & high winds all day. They enjoyed their last day by playing cribbage and gin rummy. It has been very nice to have these two as guests for so many years & hope to see them again.

2^nd year return guest Glen Marks brought a good friend and work partner Rick Gabehart for his first Canadian Fishing Adventure, both from Middletown, CA. 1^st day out they caught many Smallmouth Bass & Northern Pike and after strategizing by the map Rick was planning there second day. They caught more Pike and Smallies and Glen hit a milestone landing his first ever Muskie. Congrats to Glenn for patience and perseverance. 3^rd day was a good Northern Pike day and had Rick catching his personal best at 34”. 4^th day was a great day as they caught BIG Northern Pike 32 to 37 inches, Rick landing the 37”er & Glen landed 1-32” Lake Trout. 5^th day cold front conditions dropping temperatures to 43F by mid day along with heavy rain & wind kept these two avid anglers off the water. Last day was a terrific fishing adventure. These two ended up catching 120 Northern Pike and 1 Smallmouth Bass. I think they were fishing for Pike?? Both Glen & Rick said they never experienced a day of fishing that was even comparable, Rick’s parting words as he walked out of the lodge door was “This was the best fishing experience I have ever had”. That says it all.

The Woodhams family, Terry & Larry from Blackhawk & Irvine, CA and Bill from Mattawan, MI were fishing for their first time at Fireside Lodge. 1^st day out was exploring and they caught several Smallmouth & Northern Pike plus 3 Lake Trout in the same areas as the Pike and Smallies. That shows that the water is still cold. Second day they again caught some nice Smallmouth Bass & Pike with Terry having a massive strike that took his entire Daredevle Husky Jr

along with a 9” leader. He said the fish hit like something he never felt before. Needless to say they bought a few more Husky Jr spoons. 3^rd day Larry accomplished a fishing feat by landing his first ever Muskie measuring a husky 36”, and Larry would end up catching 3 Musky by the end of their trip. 4^th day they enjoyed seeing one of our great landmarks, Twin Falls, and caught Smallmouth and Northern Pike & Larry caught two more Muskie on a magic lure I sold him. 5^th day was a card game all day long as a cold front with high winds & heavy rain kept all of the water. 6^th & final day was a great day of fishing & making more memories, and in their parting words all said we would see them again.

Smallmouth Bass day. 3^rd day all had a BIG Smallmouth Day catching 90+ as a group with Josh landing two Trophy 18” Smallmouth along with many 17-17.5”ers landed by all. 4^th day was mostly a rain out as we got a severe cold front with heavy rain and winds all day along with temperatures dropping to 43F by 2:00 PM. The catch of the day was had by Josh as he cleaned up at the all day poker game. 5^th & final day Glenn & Mark made up for it by catching over 45 nice Smallmouth Bass. Justin & Josh also had a 35-40 Smallmouth Day. Amongst all 4 they ended up landing 24 Trophy Smallmouth Bass 18-19.5”. Glenn said it was a GREAT fishing trip.
