Fireside Lodge Fishing Report 8/17 to 8/24 2013

This week started off unusually warm at 88F but after a small T-Storm it got back more to normal in the mid 70’s.

Another BIG Northern Pike Fishing at Fireside Lodge Canada

Long time consecutive year guests Paul Letourneau from North Oaks, MN son Michael from Metairie, LA & Spencer Olson from Minneapolis, MN all arrived with smiles & ready to fish. 1 ^st day was productive for both Northern Pike & Smallmouth Bass with Spencer catching the largest Pike at 33”, & Michael caught an 18” Trophy Smallmouth Bass. 2^nd day was terrific as they took an adventure & portaged to a lake catching over 60 Northern Pike. 3^rd day they each caught about 5 fish, a combination of Northern Pike & Smallmouth Bass with Spencer catching the fish of the day being a big 17.5” Smallmouth Bass. 4^th day was very good as they caught a lot of Northern Pike, many 27-30”, & Michael had a big day as he caught another Master Angles Trophy Smallmouth Bass at 18.5” & a huge 38.5” Northern Pike. 5^th day they did fabulous catching Northern Pike & & both Michael & Spencer caught a Muskie, Spencer’s was a big 38” heavy fish. Method was trolling & lures of choice were a Top Raider, Wacker, & Flopper Popper. They were trolling all of these lures at the same time when they caught the two Musky. 6^th & final day they gave it their all trying to catch a trophy Northern Pike or Muskie catching a lot of nice Northern Pike around 30” & Paul landed the largest at 34.5”. All left having a GREAT trip.

Bill Aulenbach from Barberton, OH returned for his 10^th consecutive year 1^st day was a little slow as Bill was adapting to a different time period as he has always fished with us in early spring. 2nd day Bill caught some nice Northern Pike up to 36-inches, & had several Muskie follows. 3^rd day had Bill catching a few Northern Pike despite the high winds, which were hard to manage. 4^th day was a fabulous day as Bill followed his plan of hitting many areas & fishing at a 12-14ft drop off with weeds. He caught 19 Northern Pike & lost what he believed to be a big Musky. 6^th day was a Musky day & Bill had plenty of follows however could not hook up on one. 7^th day was a portage for Muskie after having some follows Bill did hook & land a 29” Muskie. 8^th day the lake sent off Bill with some Pike action and a few Musky follows. Bill had a great stay & is already trying to plan a visit for 2014.

Ed Pulido & son Nicholas from Wheat Ridge, CO, father Fred from Charleston, WV & brother Greg from Sunnyvale, CA were all visiting us for their first Canadian Fishing Adventure. 2 ^nd day they did well catching Smallmouth Bass with Nicholas have the hot hand catching 3 Smallmouth on 3 consecutive casts. At supper they were all smiles & said they had a great day exploring & catching Smallmouth Bass. 3^rd & final day started early with Ed & Nicholas fishing together & the first fish of the day was a BIG 17” Smallmouth Bass caught by Nicholas. They caught a few other Smallmouth Bass and a few Northern Pike, which was a first for anyone in this group. All left having a fabulous fishing experience hoping to return to make more special memories. In fact Ed told me that Nicholas was ready to sign up for next year before leaving.

Great Fishing in Canada For Pike and Smallmouth

Returning for there 4^th time were Bruce & Pamela Ross from Milwaukee, WI. On DOA they had action on Muskie & Northern Pike with Bruce hooking up on a GIANT Muskie that completely cleared the water in plain view of them during the brief fight ending by the fish getting off. 1 ^st day they were after Muskie & on Bruce’s 2^nd cast he caught a 30+-inch Muskie on the 6^th oval at the boat. They had many follows throughout the day, several at 40”plus, and both Bruce & Pam pulled a lure right out of the mouth of a bigger size Musky. Pam said it was an amazing day making some great fish stories. 2^nd day was a 20 Northern Pike day with sizes ranging up to the mid 30” area & they had a few nice Muskie follows. 3^rd & final day was all about Musky & what a phenomenal day it was as they saw 32 Muskie follows, Pam caught a Tiger Musky & she also caught a few Smallmouth Bass including a Trophy 18” Master Anglers Award Smallmouth. Both had a fabulous 3 day stay & hope to return again in the near future.

GREAT Smallmouth Bass Fishing at Fireside Lodge Canada by Tony Savino

Tony Savino, Jim Carlson, & Chris Binversie all from Mundelein, IL were fishing at Fireside Lodge for their 1 ^st time. 1^st day they did well catching some Northern Pike & Smallmouth Bass with Jim catching a 17.5”er. 2^nd day was great as they got into catching numbers of good size Smallmouth Bass. In fact Jim lost a Trophy Smallmouth by trying to land it himself. 3^rd day had them catching some Northern Pike & having fabulous top-water action on Smallmouth Bass. Jim started it off by trying a Pop-R & before you knew it all three were popping away having many blow-ups, Smallies hooked that jumped & threw the lure, plus they caught many in the range of 14 to 17.5”. They were very excited telling their story at suppertime. 4^th day was all about fishing sinking worms wacky style, which was the hot bait & presentation of the day. Tony said at 1:00 he stopped counting at 35 Smallmouth Bass. Most were big, between 15-17.5”. 5^th & final day was a great finish catching over 50 Smallmouth Bass, 30 being 16.5 to 17.5”, Jim caught a Trophy 18.5” Smallmouth Bass & Tony got two 1 at 18.5” & another measuring 19”. All left having a terrific fishing trip & hope to return.

1st Tiger Musky by Carl Adams Fishing at Fireside Lodge Canada

Carl Adams & Jody Frazer returned to Fireside Lodge for their 3^rd time. This day was full of a lot of activity starting with Smallmouth Bass & Carl losing a trophy in the netting process. They ^nd day was a fun day catching a mix of Smallmouth Bass & Northern Pike. 3^rd & 4th days they caught a mix of Northern Pike & Smallmouth Bass & both caught Muskie. Carl’s was his first Tiger Muskie measuring 32”. 5^th day had them portaging to fish for Musky. They had a great day having 14 follows, Carl had a Musky on, & Jody had two on hitting right at the boat, one getting of quickly & the other was lost in the netting process. 6^th & final day the fishing was FABULOUS catching 41 Smallmouth Bass & a 32.5” Northern Pike. Both left saying we would see them next year.

Fishing Big Northern Pike in Canada at Fireside Lodge by Keegan

Walt LaCasse from Minnetonka, MN, long time guest who has been visiting us twice a year for over 10 years, returned with grandson Keegan for his 5^th time. DOA before supper Keegan caught two nice Northern Pike, one measuring 34.5” & a 15” Smallmouth Bass. 1^st day was terrific as they caught over 20 Northern Pike 30” plus & 14-year old Keegan caught a 42” HUGE Muskie. Keegan was very excited at his great catch & Grandpa Walt had a simile from ear to ear & this special fishing memory will be with them for their lifetime. 2^nd day was slower but the high winds kept them from fishing a lot of their favorite areas. 3^rd & final day they had a ball catching a mix of Pike & Smallmouth Bass on an absolutely perfect weather day. Walt said the trip could have ended the first day after Keegan caught that giant Musky. They both made a lot more memories, and Keegan is not only Walt’s favorite fishing buddy, but also his best fishing partner. Before departing Walt made their reservations for 2014.

Many BIG Smallmouth Bass Fishing at Fireside Lodge Canada by Doug

Cousins Frank & Doug Kerr from IN & Henrico, NC were back for their 3rd consecutive year & this time joining them was Doug’s son Darin also from NC. 1^st day was tremendous Smallmouth Fishing as these three caught over 50 Smallmouth Bass all ranging from 15-17.5”, & Doug said they were all thick & heavy. 2^nd day was even better despite the high winds. In just two locations they ended up catching 83 Smallmouth Bass. A lot of these (35+) were BIG Smallmouth Bass between 16-18” & they also caught a lot 13-16”. Both Frank & Doug caught 18” Trophy Smallmouth Bass. All said this was their best day Bass fishing ever. 3^rd day was another very good day catching over 35 Smallmouth Bass, again most being over 15” & Doug caught an 18” Trophy & Frank a 18.5” Trophy Smallmouth Bass, both weighing 4lbs. 4^th day was another good Smallmouth Bass day catching over 30. 5^th & final day was another great day as they caught 15 Northern Pike & 21 bigger Smallmouth Bass & Darin caught his 1^st 18” Trophy Smallmouth Bass. All had a fabulous trip & hope to return in 2014.

Fireside Lodge Fishing Report 8/10 to 8/17 2013

HUGE 46-inch Trophy Northern Pike Fishing at Fireside Lodge Canada

This week started out cooler than normal but ended up 15 degrees above normal. The Smallmouth Bass stayed strong however we did see a drop of in Pike as it warmed up.

Return Guest Scott Beutler with his two sons Brad & Sam from Barrington, IL brought good friends Tom McGlade with his two sons Jim & Jeff from Palatine, IL. 1 ^st day was terrific fishing as a group catching over 74 Northern Pike fishing Little Vermilion Lake. It was split evenly catching 35 & 39 per boat. 2^nd day was another great numbers day as the Beutler clan caught over 30 Northern Pike up to 28” and the McGlade father & sons combo caught 34 fish, an even mix of Smallmouth Bass & Northern Pike with the fish of the day being an 18.5” Trophy Smallmouth Bass caught by Tom. 3^rd & final day, (boy 3 days go by fast), they had a great day catching 46 fish, it being a good mix of Northern Pike & Smallmouth Bass, plus two 27” Musky. I can’t express how much fun these two fathers & their sons had making some wonderful memories to be cherished for years to come.

Long time guests since 1992 father Gerald Adams & son Zack from Shawnee & Ada, OK. returned to fish Smallmouth Bass. 1^st day out was a good starter as Gerald alone caught 12 Smallmouth Bass including a 17.5”er & a Master Anglers Trophy at 18”. 2nd^-day after some further discussion about locations & depth they went out & caught 21 Smallmouth Bass. 3^rd day was a great day as they caught 34 nice Smallmouth Bass including Zack catching an 18” Trophy & Gerald a 19” Trophy. Zack said it was the 1^st time he ever caught more Smallmouth than his dad, however Gerald still caught the largest Smallmouth of the day. 4^th day they vowed to search for some new bass locations we had discussed the day before. Well by lunchtime they caught 20 nice Smallmouth Bass while discovering 3-4 new locations, & ended the day with 31 Smallmouth Bass up to 17.5”. 5^th & final day was absolutely fabulous weather and even better fishing as they caught 30 Smallmouth Bass. However the biggest catch for both Gerald & Zack was another set of father & son memories made while fishing in the beautiful Canadian Wilderness.

Smallmouth Bass Trophy Fishing at Fireside Lodge Canada by John Zukas

Brothers Bob & John Zukas from Baltimore, MD were back for their 2^nd consecutive year. DOA they did not waste any time with John catching a Trophy 18.5” Smallmouth Bass plus a 17.5”er & they caught a bunch of Northern Pike. 1^st day they did well catching mostly Northern Pike. 2^nd day was “FANTASTIC” as they caught over 70 Northern Pike & over 20 Smallmouth Bass on Little Vermilion Lake with John landing another Master Anglers Award Smallmouth measuring 18.5”. 3^rd day these two caught 22 fish mostly Northern Pike with Bob catching a 35”& 34”, and John a 34.5” and an 18.5” trophy Smallmouth Bass. 4^th day was again another good day as they caught Northern Pike up to 34” & Smallmouth Bass up to 17.5”, caught by Bob who just can’t seem to break that 18” threshold. 5^th & final day was a short one as they came in a noon to pack but they still had a great day catching 26 fish, mostly Northern Pike. John caught a 34” & Bob had a 38.5” Northern Pike and a Trophy Smallmouth Bass at 18.75” finally breaking that 18” goal. Both had a fabulous stay and hope to return.

Father & son Dan & Blake Balaja from Manhattan, IL, Adam Heinrich from Bolingbrook, IL, & Steve Duncan from Channahon, IL were experiencing Fireside Lodge fishing for there 1^st time. 1^st day they caught a lot of Northern Pike and Brad seemed to have the magic touch, as everything he used seemed to work. 2^nd day after discussing locations to catch bigger fish they went out & caught some bigger Northern Pike up to 33”. 3^rd day they adventured through a creek, broke up a beaver dam and caught close to 40 Northern Pike in about 6 hours. 4^th day Steve & Adam caught 21 fish, most being Northern Pike. 5^th day was an amazing day as the caught bigger Northern Pike. Adam caught a big 36” Pike, & Dan caught a fish of any fishers lifetime landing a “GIANT” Trophy Northern Pike measuring 46-inches. WOW, what a great catch & congrats to Dan. Last day they fished for & caught some nice Smallmouth Bass, & all left having a great week.

1st Muskie by Paul Koelling Fishing at Fireside Lodge Canada

Paul & Jonah Koelling from Ankeny, IA Rodney Cameron from Ogden, IL, Tim Koller & George Ringler from Champaign, IL, Charles Arbuckle from Dewey, IL Cooper Young from Wichita Falls, TX & Roger Rinkenberger from Centerville, TX were first time guests except for George who was fishing with us once before. 1 ^st day they did well with both George & Jonah catching a big Master Anglers Award Smallmouth, Charles & Roger after a slower morning had a good afternoon catching Northern Pike, & Jonah tore up the Smallmouth Bass using sinking worms. He caught both numbers & good size Smallies. 2^nd day sinking worm master of the group Jonah again had the hot hand catching many Smallmouth Bass, & George did well again as he landed another Trophy Smallmouth Bass at 18”. Needless to say others in the group were buying sinking worms from me at our tackle shop. 3 ^rd day Cooper & Jonah were the leaders catching 33 Smallmouth Bass & Cooper nailed an 18” Master Anglers Award Trophy Smallmouth by perfectly dropping a Tube in a dark hole between rocks. 4^th day had Tim & George catching BIG Smallmouth Bass both landing a 17”er & Tim caught a Monster 19” Trophy Smallmouth Bass. Charles & Jonah caught 20+ Northern Pike, while Cooper & Roger caught 26 Smallmouth Bass, & Rodney & Paul had a huge day catching 72 fish, including 61 Smallmouth Bass, 5 Northern Pike and Paul caught his 1^st ever Tiger Musky. 5^th day Jonah & Paul caught 31 Northern Pike & Rodney & Charles caught many Smallmouth Bass 14-18” with Charles landing a Trophy 18” Smallmouth Bass. 6^th & final day all caught a mix of fish & could not believe how fast their week of fishing flew by. Jonah said it never seems to go by that fast at work.

First time guests Jim & Kathy Cron from Roanoke, IN were here to target Smallmouth Bass. 1^st day Jim seemed to have the hot hand catching Smallmouth Bass with his ticket to success being the sinking worm rigged wacky style. 2^nd day was very good for Kathy as she caught her first Trophy Smallmouth Bass measuring 18”. Congrats to Kathy on her great catch. 3^rd day was terrific weather and even better smallmouth fishing, especially in the morning & late afternoon when they caught a bunch up to 16-inches. 4^th day these two had one of he best days they ever had catching over 30 Smallmouth Bass with a lot over 15”, and Kathy caught the largest at 17.5”. All were caught on sinking worms as they visited my tackle shop that evening to fill their usual order. 5^th & final day was slightly windy but they still did well catching some good size Smallmouth Bass. Both left have a wonderful trip and hope to return.

Trophy Fishing Smallmouth is Great at Fireside Lodge Canada by John Ziegler

John & Monica Ziegler from Union VA were back for their 5^th consecutive year. 1^st day was very good as they caught 18 Smallmouth Bass up to 17.5”, & 2 Northern Pike. Story of the day was as John was fighting a 15” Smallmouth Bass a HUGE Northern Pike took a couple of unsuccessful swipes at the Bass. After supper in the evening they caught 6 Northern Pike to top their day off. 2^nd day was fun trying to keep the pike off their lines while fishing for Smallmouth Bass. Not a bad problem to have. Monica had the Smallmouth Bass of the day landing a hefty 17.5”er. She also had a big Pike take her under the boat & break her off, & John lost a HUGE Smallmouth Bass in the weeds. 3^rd day was a portage for Smallmouth Bass & they hit it BIG catching BIG Smallmouth, Monica landing a HUGE 19”er and John an 18” Smallie, They also caught several 17, 16, & 15-inch Smallmouth Bass. 4^th day they did catch a bunch of Smallmouth Bass with John landing another Trophy Smallmouth Bass at 18.5”. Their final two days were full of action from both Northern Pike & Smallmouth Bass & with Monica catching another Trophy Smallmouth Bass at 18” on their last day. Both had a great time hope to return in 2014.

Fireside Lodge Fishing Report 8/3 to 8/10 2013

This week was the 3^rd in a row that was cooler than normal. Thursday’s high was only 55F, which is 19 degrees below normal however the fishing was terrific during this week.

HUGE Trophy Northern Pike Fishing at Fireside Lodge Canada

Father / Son Scott & Sam Kimball from Olathe, KS returned for their 4^th time bringing father in-law Dick Dalebout from Provo, UT. DOA the Northern Pike were active as they caught 10 along with many follows in just a few hours. 1st day was high adventure navigating a creek & dealing with a beaver dam to access a back lake where they caught 24 Northern Pike in just several hours of fishing. 2nd day started at my Tackle Shop with Scott & Sam looking for a lure to catch a Muskie. They took my suggestions and off they went. Well the day’s story had Sam catching his 1-^st Muskie a fat 28”er, and his grandpa also caught his first ever-measuring 38”. It was a terrific Muskie fishing day & a special memory made between grandpa & grandson. 3rd day they caught some PIke & had a lot of big Musky follows. 4^th day was a FABULOUS Musky day having many follows with Scott catching a fat 29” Muskie, and rookie fisher of the group Dick again came up with the BIG fish landing a 42.5” Tiger Musky. 5^th day was a challenge with the severe cold temps, high winds, & rain however these three stuck with it & caught 3 fish, one each that would make any fishers day. They were all huge, a 39” Tiger Musky by Sam, 39” Northern Pike by Dick, & a 39” Muskie by Scott. This makes for a 3 generations memory hard to beat. 6day was back through the creek & breaking up a beaver dam with great results as the caught 47 Northern Pike. 7^th day Scott led with Northern Pike of 29,31,32,33, &34” plus a very large 37” Tiger Musky. 8^th day they finished catching some nice Northern Pike up to 34”. All had a fabulous time making special memories between three generations.

Bill & Rosanna Goodwin from Wilmington, DE, long time guests were back to enjoy our fabulous Smallmouth Bass fishing. 1^st day they caught 25 with 18 being 14-16.5”. 2^nd day highlights were Rosanna landing a 32" Northern Pike while fishing for Smallmouth Bass with light tackle & Bill caught a BIG 17.5" Smallmouth Bass. 3rd day had Bill catching some nice Pike up to 32” & he landed a Trophy Smallmouth Bass at 18.5”. 4^th day was great catching over 20 Smallmouth Bass, 13 between 14 -19” with both Rosanna & Bill landing trophies at 18.5” & 19”. 5th day facing sever summer cold front conditions with high wind they had a lot of action catching many Smallmouth Bass, & Rosanna caught another trophy at 18.5” & both missed very large Smallies. 6^th & final day they again did well on bigger Smallmouth Bass with Rosanna landing her 2^nd Master Angler Award Trophy at 18.25”. Both left having had a great trip and hope to return.

40-inch Trophy Northern Pike Fishing Fireside Lodge Canada

David & Denise Law from East Bethel, MN returned for the 2^nd time to celebrate their 20^th anniversary. 1^st day was great fishing as they caught 16 Northern Pike 28-40”, David catching the 40” Trophy Northern Pike. 2^nd day had Denise catching her first ever Musky along with several nice Northern Pike, & after supper caught 12 more nice Northern Pike. 3^rd day was great action catching 25+ Northern Pike. 4^th day they had a wonderful day on the lake catching some Pike & Denise caught a Big Smallmouth Bass at 17.5”. This was a special day as David & Denise celebrated their 20^th anniversary. Congratulations to David & Denise. 5^th & final day was a cold, 55F with rain, but they caught a lot of Northern Pike & Denise had the best fishing day of her life catching a Trophy 18” Smallmouth Bass & a HUGE Trophy 40” Northern Pike. WOW, what a great finish to a FABULOUS trip.

Mike Stevens, Lake Barrington, IL & Jack Schneider from Huntley, IL returned for their 2^nd trip bringing brothers Chip & Paul Douglas from Rolling Meadows & Hoffman Estates, IL, James Whittington from Wheeling, IL & Bob Lauffer from Clermont, FL. 1 ^st Day Mike & Jim caught plenty of Smallmouth Bass & a few Northern Pike while Jack & Bob went Muskie fishing having 18 follows from big fish but no takers, however Bob did catch a Trophy 19.5” Smallmouth Bass. 2^nd day was Terrific for Mike as he caught over 20 Smallmouth Bass ranging from 14-17.5” & his fishing buddy Jim caught 6 SB. Bob had a good day catching 7 good Smallies and 5 nice Pike all from a lure I suggested to him from our Tackle Shop. 3^rd day had this group doing FABULOUS with Mike & Jim catching a bunch of Smallmouth Bass using Mepps spinners & Mike caught an 18.5” Trophy. Bob had a super day catching a 33, 34, & 36” Northern Pike and a 37” & 39” Muskie, all these fish being caught on another lure purchased at our tackle shop. 4 ^th & final day the group caught many nice Smallmouth Bass with Bob catching a Trophy 19”er, along with some Northern Pike and Chip caught his 1^st Muskie ever, a fat 32” Tiger Musky. All left having had a great time with Mike saying they hope to return in 2014.

Trophy Smallmouth Bass by Bob Lauffer Fishing

David & Jacob Henry from St Charles, IL returned for their 3^rd time along with Bob Mezo from Dixon, IL for his 2^nd trip. After getting by a floating bog & breaking up a beaver dam to get through a creek into a back lake they had fabulous fishing catching 42 Northern Pike & Bob caught a Trophy 18.5” Smallmouth Bass. 2^nd day was a back to reality day catching 6 fish. There 3^rd & final day had them back up the creek only to find the beaver dam they broke up about 36 hours earlier was build back up bigger & better. They could hardly believe it but they broke it down again & off they were to a great day of fishing. In total they caught 52 fish all being Northern Pike except for 4 Smallmouth Bass. Great finish to a fabulous short fishing trip.

Huge Trophy Smallmouth Bass Fishing Fireside Lodge by Tom Born Canada

Tom & Jen Born from Lakeville, MN returned for their 9th time. 1^st day they caught Northern Pike 31-32” & Jen landed great Smallmouth Bass at 17.5”. Jen shined on the 2 ^nd day as she caught 2 Trophy Master Anglers Award Smallmouth Bass along with several Northern Pike. Both Smallmouth were a HUGE 19”. 3^rd day Jen caught a Musky and they caught several Northern Pike while exploring new fishing areas. 4^th day after discussing some potential new fishing areas & particular structures they had a good day having 14 Big follows from toothy critters, Tom caught a 36” Northern Pike, had a good size Musky get off after making an acrobatic jump, and Jen did catch a Muskie. 5^th & final day had them contending with a severe cold front with high winds & heavy rains. They stuck it out until about 3:30PM catching some fish and having a few “MONSTER” follows in new fishing areas, which will add to the log of fishing spots they have developed over the years.

Jeff & Kathy Bernel from LaPorte, IN returned for their 2^nd consecutive year. 1^st day they caught 12 nice Smallmouth Bass. 2^nd day both caught some great Smallmouth Bass enjoying a nearly perfect weather day. 3^rd day & 4^th days were very similar catching a lot of Smallmouth Bass and learning the value of leeches, saying that when all else fails the leeches will always produce Smallmouth Bass. Jeff had the biggest Smallmouth of the trip landing a 17.5” large Smallmouth. They also really enjoy the wilderness atmosphere that surrounds them when fishing at Fireside Lodge and were touched by a surprise bottle of wine arranged by their daughter Laurel. Jeff & Kathy left already looking forward to next year as they made their reservations for the same dates before departing.

Super Smallmouth Bass Fishing at Fireside Lodge Canada by Zack

Mike & Zack Gerulski from Huntington Woods, MI were making their 9th father & son trip with us at Fireside Lodge. 1^st day had these two catching 13 Northern Pike up to 32” and 2-16” Smallmouth Bass. 2^nd day was another great Northern Pike day catching a lot of fish, both missed a big Pike & Zack caught a big 17.5” Smallmouth Bass. 3^rd day was a very cold windy day with heavy rain that brought had then at the dock before noon. They caught a few fish and some zz’s &attempted a fish later however were pushed in by Thunderstorms & wind. They did catch 4 Pike & several Smallmouth Bass & Zack lost the Smallmouth of a lifetime after his hook broke at the shank leaving him only with the jig head & the stump of the hook. 4^th & final day had them portaging Smallmouth Bass doing well with Zack catching a 17.5”er & then returned to Little Vermilion Lake to catch some nice Northern Pike. Both had another great trip full with father & son memories & hope to return in 2014.

Paul Miller from Kearney, NE was visiting us for his 1^st time. 1^st day Paul caught some nice Northern Pike and had many follows. 2^nd day he had fun catching some Northern Pike and landed a 32” Muskie, his first ever. He also did a great job of taking video of his catch. 3^rd day brought on a severe cold front with heavy rain and after catching a few Northern Pike Paul called it quits just before noon, had lunch and took a long nap. 4^th & final day Paul caught his 2nd Muskie along with some nice Northern Pike. The story of the day was when he hung a retro lure in a tree, which was given to him by Bill Milburn below called a Woods Doodler. In an attempt to retrieve the lure he got 4 others stuck so he came back to the lodge & had to borrow my tree limber to get this very special out of circulation lure. Another guest, Bill Goodwin above, was kidding Paul about his new Nebraska fishing rod. Paul had a great time and we hope to see him back here with his best fishing buddy, his son.

BIG Northern Pike Fishing Canada by Bob Lauffer

Grandfather Jim Herndon with Grandson Benjamin were fishing at Fireside Lodge for there 1^st time. 1^st day they caught a few Northern Pike & Smallmouth Bass. 2^nd day was off to a Northern Pike portage lake. & had a ball catching 26 Northern Pike. 3^rd day they portaged trying to catch Muskie but the Musky just were not cooperating. It was not for lack of effort as they fished hard all day having a few follows. That’s Muskie fishing for ya. 4^th & final day was planned for fishing the upper arm of Little Vermilion Lake so the could view and eagles nest and spend some time at Twin Falls. They did exactly that plus caught some nice Northern Pike & a few Smallmouth Bass. Great memories made between Grandfather & Grandson & thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge to spend special time together.

18-inch Smallmouth Bass Fishing Fireside Lodge Canada by Bill Milburn

Father Bill & son Ben Milburn from Conway, AR were fishing in Canada & at Fireside Lodge for their 1 ^st time. 1^st day they caught a dozen Smallmouth Bass, 2 Pike & Bill caught an 18.5” Trophy Smallmouth Bass. 2^nd day faced with a severe cold front & heaved rain they still caught 10 Smallmouth Bass & Ben landed the fish of his life & his 1^st Muskie ever measuring at a huge 42.25”. WOW, what a great fist Musky catch. 3^rd day they had a BIG day catching 32 Smallmouth Bass & 3 Northern Pike. 4^th day was a very large day literally as Ben caught a 35.5” Northern Pike and a Master Anglers Award Muskie measuring 44.5” along with a bunch of other Pike. WOW, these are two guys that never fish for Northern Pike or Muskie. When you think things could not get any better the 5th & final day proved to be spectacular as Ben hooked & landed a GIANT 43” Northern Pike. The unfortunate happening was after measuring this Pike as Ben was about to lift it up, the fish gave a violent surge and jumped clear over the side of the boat & darted off. Great Memories & Great fun had by this father and son & thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge for you first Canadian Wilderness Fishing Adventure.
